Ethos 0 Posted November 23, 2007 Hi guys, My girlfriends wants a better sound system in her 205. The front speakers are aweful and breakup at about 1.5w. How easy is it to plum in some rear speakers? I've installed a sub / run power etc.. down a car before but not sure how i'd connect the speaker wire to the headunit as there are no rear speakers by standard are there? Also would I have to cut the rear shelf? I don't really want to, but don't mind if I HAVE too. Thanks guys, just a little xmas pressie for her. I might have to actually check that, if the wiring is already in that'd be ace. I've installed her old headunit into the car but nothing came out the rear speakers so I just assumed it didn't have any. I'll go and check now.... Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

brianthemagical 1 Posted November 23, 2007 (edited) think about the last time you went to a gig, or some form of publicish speaker, or spoke face to face with a person. the sound was in front. why not upgrade the fronts? it's a darn sight easier and gives much better results. Theres NO space for any good ones in the front and they're tiny?! They're behind the standard grill in the door... What sort of fronts would fit in the orginal position that sound good? brianthemagical 1 Posted November 24, 2007 fronts are indeed 13cm, they are plenty big enough, unless you've already got a good few 1000 watts of sq mid in your boot. for the grills, as mine were touching the surround and vibrating, i got base model grey, not black as i wanted to keep them, grills and cut out all the bars then covered it a la stelth shelf, looks ok and no one has pointed them out. i've got focal polyglass co-ax's, they sound mint, and were only (as in compared to what you can pay for tiny speakers) £200 but make a hell of a difference. if you can't get 13's loud enough then amp them. de Noir 0 Posted November 24, 2007 Exactly, both speaket positions front and rear accomodate 13cm units. I once run 4 Pioneer H-series two system units front and back, powered by head unit. This was backed up by bridged 2x100W amp which drove the sub, mounted in the boot. Sounded very well, looked stealth as possible. Standard speaker positions in 205, both front and rear, although modest in diameter are very generous in depth, so various types of quality 13cm speakers will fit: Focal, DLS, RCF and other gear with deep speaker basket & large magnet. Also, they're close to ear level as possible, so I see no need for aditional visible tweeters. With such possibilites there is really no sense of cutting rear parcel shelf for ovals. jeremy 68 Posted November 24, 2007 As this is not your car and all you are looking to do is give some nice sounds at reasonble cost I would only fit front speakers and a sub in the boot. God that makes me sound so Max Powery. In the past I've used Kenwood, Jbl, and Alpine, you can generally pick up a decent enough pair for about £35 to £40 either two or three way perhaps another £10 to £15 or so. IMO what has made the best sound wasn't always the speakers, but more importantly the quality of sound put into them in the first place however obviously the speakers can make a difference. When securing the speakers I normally use some not sure what they are called but they are similar in idea to captive nut, they are like a small piece of sprung steel bent in half with a screw hole through it that goes over the door metal to help provide a better fastening for the retaining screws of the speaker. I hope that made sence. If the original H/U does not have great power then I would highly recommend an Alpine V power amplifier unit as these are easy to get off Ebay for very little money, and could run both the fronts and sub example an MRP F240 expect to pay around £50-£60 inc P&P max plus wiring kit just over £10. Also while you are about it I would upgrade the speaker wire, I bought mine by the meter from Richer Sounds as it worked out alot cheaper than a car audio specialist. Paintguy 0 Posted November 25, 2007 I'd also suggest upgrading the fronts first, and if you want to, move the original fronts to the rear. There's no point spending big money on your fronts if they're only going to be run off the headunit, but a cheap set of components is a good idea. The separate tweeters will allow you to mount them in a position that sounds best to you, and you wont have clearance problems with the original grilles. It does mean an extra piece of hardware to find room for though, and they'll be more noticeable. Although bigger is better up front (I'm hoping to fit some 8¾" ones in mine!), a 5" will be more than adequate for a non amped system. There have been competition winning cars based around 5" front speakers, so they can't be all that bad The main problem you'll have are the flimsy doors and mounting area. These will make it hard for you to get any real bass without a lot of work, but again it's not a major issue if you're only running a few watts from the HU. CaptainK 11 Posted November 26, 2007 I replaced all my existing speakers with uprated 13cm units when I first got the 205. Sounded mint. Though originally it was missing the rear drivers (UK) side speaker! Unfortunately over the years, occasionally one or two of the speakers will stop working for a while, then start working for a while. Just depends on the cars mood I guess.
