Mi16 Starting Problem

I have done a few searchs but cant find anything that will help me!

 

Im at a friends and he has an mi16 1.9 alloy block engine in his 205!

 

Basicly his head gasket went on the old mi16 engine so he took the old one out and put a freshly rebuilt engine in!

 

Now we have come to start it, it wont start!

 

I have checked everythng i can think of, the wireing is a little bit of a mess but its al there and pluged in and it did run before the engine swap!

 

So i have checked theres fuel going to the engine and there is!

 

There is allso spark on everylead!

 

So im a little bit bumed to why it wont start!

 

I was thinking it seemed like the ecu is dead or something but not sure as i have the fundermentals there for it to start!

 

Any ideas what i can do or mite be able to test to try to resolve this!

If there is definitly spark, and fuel.. two of the three things needed for combustion mate..

 

sure the timing is right??

 

 

EDIT: just re-read. the engine ran before.. I'd check and clean all the earths, and check all the little things that can go wrong,

like the little pins in all the important plugs...

 

I'm thinking the 205 has batch fire type fuelling? injectors definitly connected round the right way if not?

theres defo compression!

Plugs are the rite way around!

Timing is spot on!

Tryed bumping it and it just doesn't want to no.....

Somethings dead somewhere?

Is it actually firing the starter, but not starting or is there just nothing there at all?

Is it a strong, bright blue spark?

 

Is the AFM the right way round?

Yep its firing the starter so the engine turns over...

Spark is plenty good.....

Yep air flow meter is the correct way round!

Theres fuel.....Only thing i can think it could be is the ecu?

I'd check the connections for the ECU temp sensor thoroughly. It could be massively overfulling.

 

If you have fuel and spark the ECU itself is fine, and they rarely break anyway.

It has a blue two pin plug and its on the side of the thermostat housing. Look inside the plug to make sure the pins haven't been pushed back in.

And if it is overfueling, then it should chug over to some degree if you give it WOT. Also, if you unplug the injectors and start it it should run for a few seconds while it burns off the surplus fuel.

Defo not that plug...checked that one yesterday.......Im half temped to strip the loom back out the the car and trace every wire back to the ecu to check there all ok....

I would have said crank sensor, but if its getting fuel and spark then the ECU is working OK in my book.

 

If you have compression, spark, fuel, air and a working starter motor then it really should be starting OK, so I'm all out of ideas.
