Just a couple of quickies:

 

Is power steering fluid universal or do I need a special type, if so what?

 

I need to replace my gearbox oil. I know engine oil is fine but what grade?

PAS fluid is universal.

 

You can't use engine oil in your gearbox, you need gearbox oil and its something funny like 70w90 or something - cheapest place I found it was at Peugeot at about £8 for a litre.

PAS fluid is the same thing as automatic transmission fluid, which is often cheaper if you need to buy more than a small bottle.

 

75W80 is the gearbox oil you need.

correct, use ATF (Automatic Transmission Fluid), which is mostly red in colour.

 

for the gearbox, 75W80 as suggested or 75W90 (rare), as 80W90 is too thick.

Will a litre fill my gearbox then? And how much PAS fluid (or ATF) will I need?

It takes 2 litres to fill the XU gearbox's IIRC

 

And as for PAS fluid, i think that will be about the same, fill the system up as much as it will go, turn the engine on, fill it up to the maximum level. then turn the wheels from lock to lock and that will get any trapped air out. Job done!

you should see how much oil came out of a truck diff I drained last week, over 25 litres of 80-90!!! 50 quid's worth of oil!!

 

 

 

and yes, 2 litres is what a BE gearbox needs.

my gearboxes usually take about 1.8 liters.

yeah they usually do, the 2 litre figure is for a dry fill

It also depends on how much you spill while doing it! The gearbox is a s*it to fill unless you have equipped yourself with some suitable tools such as a flexible funnel or similar (unless you fill it through the top hole via the engine bay).
