Mating Engine With Cosworth Gearbox

Recommended Posts

Guest Batfink

I want a mid mounted v6 but cannot find the gearbox that will allow this as the FWD gearboxes sit the engine over the rear wheels and I cant find a box that will fit transversally and allow the engine to sit infront of the wheels.

So plan b is to get a 4WD box and block the rear propshaft hole. Im sure for cheapness a cosworth one will be ideal. The problem is mounting it to the 406 v6 engine.

Anyone know if a company would make a custom bell housing so they can join or throw in any other ideas to this problem!!

It would be so easy to just throw in a cossie engine too but I want to own a peugeot not a ford!!

I'm unsure about this, but if the V6 uses the same mating configuration as the 205 GTI/405 Mi16,ie:the BE type, then an Audi 80 g/box will fit. In this month's CCC there is an Mi engine, mounted longitudinally, like a proper mid engined car, using said g/box.

The gearbox from a Renault 21 also mounts the engine longitudinally with the driveshafts sticking out of the gearbox casing behind the engine. I can imagine they're pretty strong as well if they were used on the 21 turbo.

Also in CCC was this -

You can use a Sierra type 9 gearbox a la XR4x4, as the V6 gearbox has a longer input shaft than the 2-litre variant, and a normal 2 litre type 9 bellhousing, then make up an adaptor plate to take up the gap, and mount a Pug engine or pretty much anything else on it.

Which begs the question - what sort of layout do you want? mid engined, RWD? because the Cosworth gearboxes were all based on a Sierra layout, with a longitudal engine mounting, and a take-off drive to the right hand side which drove a longitudal propshaft (Via a viscous coupling and other trickery) to the front diff, which in turn was mounted on the sump.

If you leave out the rear-wheel driveshaft on these boxes you won't get a lot of torque at the front as all the drive will be via the viscous coupling and it'll slip continuously.

now im confused. So the cosworth gearbox is longtitudinal and the engine is transversally mounted???

Are you saying a 4wd box is then a wast of time? Can the viscous coupling be removed??

This Audi 80 box..is that from a quattro? or a front or rear wheel drive car.

no, cosworth engines are longitudinally mounted as well.

here's a quick idea - longitudinally mid-mount a V6 engine with the gearbox,

lock the diff and mate it to a prop-shaft that would go into a 405 mi16x4 rear

torsen diff which drives the driveshafts.

and another one - normal sierra is rwd isn't it, so get that gearbox, prop shaft

and rear diff and then you "only" have to mate a pug engine to sierra gearbox

and you're sorted :D
