Starter Wiring

Recommended Posts

ok help required please folks, im very confused.

starter motor wasnt working.

i ran a bypass lead from the spade connector on the solenoid and touched it to 12v +ve which cranked the starter nicely so its a wiring related issue.

checked voltage on the solenoids switched live at the brown multiplug under the bonnet and got 0.4v

checked the voltage at the brown multiplug in the drivers footwell and got 12v

so i assume the wire is broken down for some reason.

Thismorning i run a new wire from the solenoid to footwell and crimp some connections to feed off the loom's switched live, and its still not starting even though i get 12 volts there.

and to add, i was getting a voltage of 10v (although i didnt have a great earth) at the solenoid end of my new wire when at switched live

i'd also like to know this as a i have a dodgy hot start issue that appears to be the wire to the starter.. or perhaps the starter itself.

Any original 205 wiring under the bonnet will be corroded by now, its getting to the point where complete rewirings are becoming necessary IMO.

If you cut the plugs off the end of the wires and strip the insulation to fit a new plug you will find the wires are blackened and brittle. Cut a few more inches away and if you're lucky you'll find some fresh copper but in my experience you will cut more and more off and it will still be useless. So basically you need to make up some new wiring from the under dash multiplug to the starter at the very least. Are your dash lights and gauges reliable?

You could have found pages and pages on this topic with a basic search, this has been a hot topic since I first joined this forum many many years ago!
