You will need :

'L' shaped GTI gear lever.

Grinder/stone.

Hammer & punch.

6.4mm drill bit and drill.

Bench vice and pillar drill (not essential)

Welder/ someone who can do it for you, a local garage perhaps.

First of all take your gear lever and grind off the material that holds the ball joint in place:

You dont need to go crazy at this point, just enough so you can see the round peg that is part

of the ball joint showing through:

Insert into a vice (or hold steady) the gear lever ready to knock out the ball joint using the hammer and punch,

Give it a nice hard thwack with the hammer and punch in the centre of where you can see round peg showing through:

One more thwack should have it completely out:

Next you need to re-drill the hole to insert the ball joint back into. I usually go about 17mm further up the linkage, but

you can experiment with going to about 20-25mm. I use a vernier or steel rule for measurements and once you have

it marked up use the centre punch and hammer again to spot the hole so the drill does not wander:

Re-insert the ball joint peg into the hole, if you've got the drill size right it will be a nice tight fit usually waranting a vice

to go back in:

Lastly all the needs doing is a small tack of weld on the underside to hold the ball joint in place:

Or if you feeling brave weld a threaded bar onto the peg and attach using a nyloc.

Apply some Hammerite to the weld and your done! reattach back onto your car and go and try out some short shifting. Have fun

Sam.

I ground the old ball off, drilled a hole nearer the pivot and bolted one of miles' ball joints + thread into it with a nut and nyloc nut ontop, just to be sure .

I just got the ball that screws directly to the subframe off of a spare car and drilled a new hole on the L shaped arm then screwed it on. I still have the original ball too so I can easily swap between normal and short.

Neither did I until I changed my subframe a few weeks ago and it looked like it might work so I gave it a go. I generally don't like short shifts on 205s so I didn't want to lose the original fitting and I also put the new one as close as possible to the standard position so it just tightens things up slightly rather than transforming it entirely.

I also cut about two inches off the top of my gearstick so it matches the height of my bucket seat, that improves feel loads and in both directions as well.

Yeah I must admit, that mine is not shortshifted at the moment (had one previously) but I can still make quick enough gear changes.

Hhmm, chopping the stick down sounds interesting! I want a starter button in the gearknob like that McMerc had on FG last night

Single wiper blade conversion can also be made in the above listed method> Not that many folk on here like them though!

Every SLR has push button start not just the naff drop tops. The question is just how much do you want one............... ;) though you cant get to the pin connectors inside the knob to re wire them without pretty much destroying the thing :)
