Piston Information For Xu10j4rs?

Recommended Posts

cybernck

hello,

a friend is rebuilding his XU10J4RS engine for use of track racing and needs your advice about pistons.

he's either going to use standard pistons or some aftermarket forged ones (lol, as if there's a 3rd choice),

so here are two questions for you to try and answer:

1 - when using standard pistons, what's the bore clearance to aim for, for best compression but

without a possibility to seize up in extreme conditions?

2 - what forged pistons are available on the market for this engine (they have to be 86mm to stay

under 2000 ccm though!) and what do they cost?

thanks :).

Wössner have pistons in their catalogue for the RS engine.

http://www.woessner-kolben.de/english/indexenglish.html

I'm sure lots of other suppliers have them too, but somehow wiseco and other big manufacturers don't seem to list any peugeot pistons, but still they make them.

Wössner has it in 86mm bore with 12.2:1 compression.

No idea on price though.

as for No.2 - try to ask Guy hes very helpful and kind man ;) : http://www.guy-croft.com/ ( contact him directly via e-mail and you will get quick reply regarding aftermarket pistons also this man sell them so maybe you can buy them from him if you wish ... you can say that myself - Damir recommend him to you for info about this subject he will remember me if you write my name as Damir or DamirGTI ... )

Kind regards !

I paid for custom made (xu9j4) JE Pistons something about 910 $ but I’m sure if you go straight to the manufacturer You will pay less than that.

I'm running JE piston's and Saenz H pattern rods in mine, I think the Rich off the 306 GTi forum does as well with his charged RS engine,

All Replacement Ring's and Forged piston's should come with the manufactures recomended clearances

I used a set of wossners in an engine i built earlier this year the cams were quite wild but i still expected to have plenty if valve clearance, in the end i had to machine the inlet and exhaust pockets deeper, i also ended up taking a cut off the faces of the valves just to get clearance. after lots of hours of generally messing about i wished i had paid proper money and bought some decent pistons from omega!

Machining valve pockets is just part of performance engine building. My gripe with Omega is that the pockets are too deep and you throw away valuable cc's, which have to be put back into the crown, causing an obstruction to the flame front. I'd much rather machine the pockets to the correct depth, as dictated by the cam lifts, lifter type and squish height.

I've had a good association with Wiseco in the past but I'd have to say I'm a little browned off at present with the lack of communication and order time. I've got two outstanding orders which were placed in May.

I run the std. XU9J4 pistons at 0.002-0.0025" clearance for track work and they work a treat, even though they have expansion struts. The same would also apply to XU10J4RS pistons. Expect a little more blow-by due to wider ring gap.

You'll pay anything from $850 to $2000 for a set of forged pistons. With current high silicon content pistons, clearance is approx. 0.003". They run a light tighter compared to older forgings with less silicon.
