1.9 Engine

Recommended Posts

2052006

I've been offered a 1.9 engine (to replace my 1.6) for about £20. For such a small amount I thought I might as well..... my 1.6 is a '91, so what do I need to look out for in terms of compatibility? Also, this engine has not been run for a while, so any advice on what to look for on the engine. I know it's only £20 so I may as well, - but I'm tight :)

Cheers for any advice - this'll be my first engine conversion.

for £20 Id take the head off, check the rings and liners, replace stem seals and new head gasket and belt before fitting. Other than that it should be one out one in so long as the bottom end isnt knocking and the rings arent too badly worn.

PS, hope that includes ecu, injectors, dizzy and AFM.

Includes injectors and dizzy but not AFM or ECU, but they're not hard to get hold of right?

Is doing h/gasket, stem seals and belt hard? - does it take any specialist tools? Never taken the head of an engine before, but this'll be the ideal opportunity as hopefully I can do it all before swapping the engine - in terms of swapping it - don't think I'll have too much of a problem having read the conv. article on this site. Famous last words....

One question though from that article - it says about later engines running a different injection system with the coil on the manifold. Does this just mean 1.9s which were catylised? Ie. Would, say an '89 1.9 work with a '91 (1.6) inj system..?

sorry to cause confusion and contradict Richie but i really wouldn't put any time/money/effort into it before fitting it unless you're absolutely certain it's a good engine

i've been in this position before, having done a load of work to an engine that wasn't (it turned out) worth bothering with - it's a proper mong putting an engine in after having done a load of work to it, to find out that you've wasted a load of time and money on it

i'd suggest just putting it for the minimum outlay (oil, coolant etc) to check it actually works to start with

ed. PS. what's wrong with your 1.6? unless you're prepared to take the 1.6 out, install the 1.9, remove the 1.9 and reinstall the 1.6, i wouldn't risk it - but then i've no longer the time to be doing this kind of thing myself :)

I see where your coming from but Id rather be certain the rings and liners looked in fine fettle before fitting, a lot harder to swap the engine than whip the head off. Taking the head off is free and takes 20 mins first time round. If its fubar then just stick some new stem seals in for a couple of quid and sell the head on for £20, if it all looks fine then bang it back together and fit it. If the bottom end knocks etc then you know you have a good head to sell, decent rings and liners as spares for another engine and a new belt and tensioner etc for the next engine. Only going to lose a head gasket and mani gaskets. Putting it in and finding it needs any of the above means the car is off the road until its either done or engine swapped back.

a couple of thins you can do to instantly know wether its a bag of hamers or something worth using, turn it over by hand, does it turn over at all? does it feel notchy and tight (with spark plugs out so you dont get compression), if it all feels good like that spray a litle wd40 or similar into the bores and do a compression test either by hand or on the starter, by hand you should be seeing arround 80-100 psi pon the starter a little more maybe 110-130, id definatley do this before i even think of fitting it, for all you know it may be totaly f***ed, or on the other hand splash out 600-800 quid get it re-cond and have a beauty of an engine :)

also if you do end up fitting it you can use most of the 1.6 parts (correct me if im wrong) but i think most are the same...

also before you fit it you MUST fit a new clutch and cambelt!!!!!!! you have been warned as if you dont we will all slap you

another vote for drop it in as is. The head bolts are likely to snap creating another can of worms, Just throw it in with new oil and see what happens. To get the head rebuilt and check all the rings etc is a big job and is going to be time consuming and costly and seeing as you are tite it would apperar that the way to go
