pee vee 1 Posted July 4, 2007 Anyone had trouble with a pug sport style sump baffle? seems to hit the sump before the mating sufaces touch having a quick look it seems the problem is where the sump plug screws into the sump, the cut out in the baffle isnt big enough to go around it. am i doing something wrong or is this something people have had before? 1900 8v sump BTW trying to put it on an mi16
welshpug 1,677 Posted July 4, 2007 have you put the spacer onto the Mi16 lump?
pug_ham 245 3 Cars Posted July 4, 2007 The Mi16 sump is deeper than the 8v one, especially the 1.9 8v sump so it won't fit. Graham.
C_W 3 1 Cars Posted July 4, 2007 The 1.9 8v and 1.9 Mi16 sumps should be the same depth, you shouldn't have any problems fitting the 1.9 steel sump to an Mi16 as this is the sump it's designed for. It's a nightmare trying to fit one to an Mi16 sump as it has vanes that protude in to the sump so they need to be ground down. You do have the spacer fitted between the sump and block? Anthony 1,003 Posted July 4, 2007 The fit on some of the PTS style* baffles is terrible frankly and some do need to be cut/modified before they'll fit. Worse place in my experience is round the oil pump/pickup - every single PTS style* baffle I've seen has needed some modification (in one case over 5mm of metal removing!) so as not to foul the pump It's nothing to do with the spacer plate as the baffle fits between the spacer and the sump. (* I say PTS style baffles as I believe that there are companies making replicas, and it might be these that are the issue rather than the genuine PTS baffles - I don't know which the ones I have fitted in the past have been)
pee vee 1 Posted July 4, 2007 thanks guys. yes spacer plate is sitting on the bottom of the block. it almost SEEMS like there should be another spacer plate between the sump and the baffle :s which of course there cant be, as the cross bracing in the spacer plate would get in the way of the baffles in the sump lol.. time to get the grinder out it seems :s
pee vee 1 Posted July 4, 2007 (edited) This is the sump that the PTS baffle is supposed to be used with... right?? EDIT: this is the sump baffle i have.. its a country mile off fitting.. even if the cut out round the Drain plug was made bigger, the rest of the baffles are still very close to touching the base of the sump.... the mating surfaces still 10mm away from meeting .. Anthony 1,003 Posted July 4, 2007 All the PTS baffles I've fitted have been designed for 1.9 8v sumps like you've got there (Mi16 tin sumps are the same) If yours is still 10mm proud, I'm wondering if they did a version for a 1.6 sump (which is 10mm higher as it doesn't use a spacer plate) and that's what you've got? If so, run a 1.6 sump and do away with the sump spacer plate
pee vee 1 Posted July 4, 2007 mine is a 1.9 engine.. i guess there is no way of telling if the baffle is for a 1600.. If i put it in the MI16 ALLOY sump, its Very close to fitting.. just needing the one little bit trimmed off (which ive heard is usual to fit a alloy sump?) this is a bit strange lol
Anthony 1,003 Posted July 4, 2007 That's very odd, as an Mi alloy sump is approximately the same depth as a 1.9 8v tin sump? Stupid question, but your tin sump doesn't have a big dent in it or something does it that the baffle is fouling on? Alot of sumps are dented and need straightening/replacing for the baffle to fit properly...
pee vee 1 Posted July 4, 2007 (edited) the sump seems fine, the bottom of it is flat and looks ok.. here are some more pics to show how far out it is, or SEEMS seems quite undamaged with baffles touching the drain plug, and the base of the sump its THIS far out EDIT: IF the 1600 sump is that bit taller it could work... HOWEVER, using the baffle without the spacer, the 'windage tray' part of the baffle scrapes on the big ends as it rotates Edited July 4, 2007 by pee vee
Miles 331 1 Cars Posted July 4, 2007 There was 2 types of baffle, the 1.6 and 1.9 types many yr's ago so it looks like you;ve got a super rare 1.6 one.
pee vee 1 Posted July 4, 2007 (edited) right. £200 to whoever wants it. lol. only kidding... i need a 1900 one.. either that or it gets cut up to fit the 1900 Edited July 4, 2007 by pee vee
pee vee 1 Posted July 4, 2007 should of been 1600 lol think i am gonna try and use a modded/chopped second spacer between the sump and the baffle, to try and get the clearance, see if that works.
C_W 3 1 Cars Posted July 5, 2007 It's nothing to do with the spacer plate as the baffle fits between the spacer and the sump. It would be if he's trying to bolt it up without one!
pee vee 1 Posted July 5, 2007 (edited) all sorted what ive done iiis use the 1900 sump cut the cross bracing out of the spacer plate. so now i have Baffle Spacer sump as i thought i might as well try and simulate the higher walls of the 1600 sump with the spacer plate. seems to have worked, the baffles end pretty close to the floor of the sump. and its all sealer'd onto the engine now.. just cam belt and manifolds to go Edited July 5, 2007 by pee vee
Anthony 1,003 Posted July 5, 2007 Wouldn't it have been easier to use a 1.6 sump?
pee vee 1 Posted July 5, 2007 (edited) would of been but 1: i dont have one 2: ive made arrangements for the engine to go in this weekend, and wont have time to get one. i can get hold of a sump at some point and swap them over if it came to it. VisaGTi16v 1 Posted July 5, 2007 I have this baffle setup but with an ally mi16 sump with all the ribbing inside. A couple of the outer points on the baffle had to be ground down slightly and a new hole had to be drilled for the dipstick but then it fitted fine. They are designed for the iron sump as mentioned previously in this thread
pee vee 1 Posted July 5, 2007 you had me so worried just then!! ive already sealed the sump on without checking the dipstick clearance .. had to run down to the garage just now! lol thankfully everything seems fine with mine.. must be a load of different designs of these baffles kicking about.. :s
brumster 135 1 Cars Posted July 9, 2007 Same here... need to drill/cut a hole for the dipstick, also the slot that I assume is for the oil level sender is a bit off and needed opening up too. Another little mod to do. Otherwise it fitted on fine, though, I must admit (sump clearance was okay).
