Vacuum Pipe Fitted

Recommended Posts

ah250

My CTI feels really flat, although it cruises fine etc.....It just wont rev like it should (ie above 3000rpm)....The car does smell rich on idle.

On the weekend i thought i'd give it a look over (check plugs/leads etc), tinker with timing etc.

The plugs were all good!

I noticed that the pipe for the vacuum advance was:

1) not fitted at the vacuum end

2) split at the manifold

I fitted a new pipe and took it for a blat. The result is definately an easier starting/idling car, my guess is that the car also feels a bit more willing to rev. I didnt have time to tinker with the timing, or look at idle mixture.

On heavy acceleration, i am now 'very occasionally' met with a violent flat spot (enough to push you forward in your seat), then the car comes back....Only happens for a split second, but its as if someones hit the brakes??????? Its not triggered by hitting the throttle, you might floor it at 2000rpm & the car quite happily spins up, then hits a point....My guess is the flat spots around 3-3500???

Any ideas on what the firks happening?

Dave

Sounds like a coil or ignition amp breaking down. Exactly the symptoms I had from a duff coil. Basically the engine turns off for a moment (maybe 0.5s maybe less). This will probably progress...

I first fitted an ignition amp after this blew but shortly afterwards had to do the coil as the issue returned. Coil fitted and all is now good (with the ignition anyway!)

Sounds like the car needs a bit of TLC. Check all the basics (dizzy cap, rotor arm, leads, ignition timing, idle mixture, breathers, plugs) Once complete then you stand a chance.

P.S. No need to go spending a fortune randomly replacing everything. Check and replace the necessary, cleaning and adjustment can yield big results on a neglected car.

thanks Rob.

"Basically the engine turns off for a moment (maybe 0.5s maybe less)", thats just how it felt although it wasn't doing before I connected up the vacuum unit?????

Coil....sounds like an ebay hunt to me as they are quite steep new aren't they...do you know if any 1.6GTI coil will do for the CTI?

Yep, going to casually get her sorted.....She's still a fun little car & not really worth spending lots on (dizzy cap, rotor arm, leads, plugs, oil & filter & fuel filter works out exactly what i paid for her!) that being said she is still great fun to drive, the hoods good and it never fails to put a smile on my family's face, unlike my £16K Focus C-max (although that is quiet, has mega stereo, aircon, doesnt judder/creak/leak oil etc etc)....

Cheers

I can't see how hte vacuum advance could do this. You have got to loose spark or injectors to cause that sudden loss for a short period.

Fitting the vacuum advance pipe can affect the idle as with a hole in it it draws a bit of air in that bypasses the AFM. This leak makes it run slightly leaner (as it is not measured by the AFM) but it can be adjusted out by fiddling the AFM idle mix screw.

Only other thing you should notice is an improved fuel economy as it doesn't act at idle (with throttle closed the drilling is on the other side of the throttle plate) or full throttle (no vacuum).
