Guest mjw Posted May 24, 2007 Well, I'm sure many will see this as a retrograde step, but I'm looking to exploit a cheap supply of sticky 13" rubber. I've been informed that 13" diameter rims should fit over the 1.6 Bendix set-up, but want to make sure I get the widest yet cheapest set-up possible with the correct offset. As such, didn't know if anyone had any experience of playing around with other PSA steelies in this diameter? I've tried searching the archives but to no avail; anyone know if there's a std (read: cheap) wheel that might do the job, say 5.5 or 6 x 13?
Baz 421 Posted May 25, 2007 Do a search, has been covered before. A couple of people run 13s i know of yes, rallyman on here runs Lotus Sunbeam alloys and exploits the use of many a cheap slick!
VisaGTi16v 1 Posted May 25, 2007 I run 13's over my 1.6 brakes. The Visa's standard alloys are 5.5", I also run XR2 pepperpots which are 6" wide although I eventually cut the anti shake clip things out from the brake pads as they kept grinding on the inside of the wheel. Both of those wheels are quite heavy though. I picked up an old 6" sunbeam wheel at my friends before (rallys a Lotus Sunbeam) which was a lot lighter but he wouldnt let me run off with the set Cant complain too much as he has given me loads of his old cut rally slicks to use I will try and weigh one of the XR2 wheels, I recall it was half a kilo lighter than the Visa alloy when I tried one of each with a 48R on. I think it will be tricky to find a 6" steel with the correct offset, those sunbeam ones were only 1 one ET25 (think Citroen are 24?), the Xr2 ones however are 32 iirc and I have to run spacers. GazRallye 0 Posted May 25, 2007 I asked a while ago and was informed AX GTi wheels will fit
VisaGTi16v 1 Posted May 25, 2007 They look very similar to my Visa GTi alloys but for some reason I thought they were 14". Either way, they are 4 stud unlike GT's and earlier AX's. There is one parked round the road from my work, very rare car but its running some painted white 14" steels which look quite good, probably these ones actually! http://home.att.ne.jp/wind/ax/modification/wheels_r.html
GazRallye 0 Posted May 25, 2007 AX Gti are 13" for sure and 4 stud, i haven't seen proof of them going over 1.6 gti brakes and i'm a little sceptical (cited)
Jrod 7 Posted May 26, 2007 I just weighed in a set of ax gti alloys.
VisaGTi16v 1 Posted May 27, 2007 ax gti wheels are almost identical to my visa gti ones which are fine over 1.6 brakes as thats what the car came with and still has. Granted the ax wheels could be thicker on the inner face. What weight were they Jrod? I know my Visa ones are heavy, my 13" xr2 ones are half a kilo lighter but both still a lot
Turbo7379 3 Posted May 30, 2007 I run 13" steel peugeot rims with my 1.9 GTI calipers but I'm not sure about a 1.6 which runs a different caliper . I've had to grind a bit off the caliper to let them fit but it now means I can use cheaper 13" rubber . As for which rims fit , it's pot luck . There's a certain pattern of rim that usually fits but not always & it's the standard steel rim found on 205's , 309's , 306's . xantias & several other pug/citroen models . The rims are usually 5" wide , sometimes 5.5" on later cars & rarely 6" . Pug XS rims definately don't fit without spacers . I went into my local breakers a few years ago & bought around 20 various 13" pug/cit rims for £50 & I'm still using them !
paul_portsmouth 3 Posted June 5, 2007 get some wellers on there thwy do 13 x 5 all they way up to 13x
Guest mjw Posted June 7, 2007 Thanks all, much appreciated. Have been away on holiday, so sorry I haven't got back on here. Looks like I have found a set of Sunbeam alloys (6x13" I think) for a reasonable price; hoping they should do the trick! My only concern is the that the centrebore is correct, other than that all seems ok. Will let you know the outcome...
VisaGTi16v 1 Posted June 7, 2007 You may be lucky there! A friend of mine rallys a Lotus Sunbeam and when I was at his I found a set of 6x13's and they were far lighter than my visa/xr2 13's and the centre bore did seem to be the same using a vernier. He didnt want to let me have them though
Baz 421 Posted June 8, 2007 As said earlier, rallyman uses Sunbeam rims with no problems, presume the centre bore is the same.
VisaGTi16v 1 Posted June 8, 2007 Nothing a bit of tedious savaging with a dremel wouldnt fix heh. I started to do that with my xr2 wheels but then realised I needed to use spacers anyway so there was no point!
