Just A Bit Of Help With My Engine Conversion!

Recommended Posts

Hi guys,

Got very wet over the weekend trying to fix my phase one GTI... after the bottom end went I was offered a good deal so got to work on fitting my fancy 1.9 (not sure of spec but it's a longman one apparently)

I'm struggling a little as i've got the old engine out leaving the 1.6 box in which i am going to keep. What I want to know is whether to leave the box in to fit the engine and whether its possible whilst leaving the manifolds on etc

i also broke the water pipe thingy on the back of the engine.. whats it called and where can i get one? and also does anyone have a 1.9 ecu and a afm i can buy?

do I need anything else? can't wait to get it in an a little depressed i couldnt get it in at the weekend (and i work long hours  )

need 2 get it in asap.. some pics ....

Take the box out and bolt it too the engine, far far easier. You can put both manifolds on just fine. I'd also get the water distribution block all bolted on at the back of the engine, the bit you broke, look in forsale section, saves a lot of hassle. All you need is the AFM, ECU and 1.9 dizzy, if the engine didnt come with one.

i have a mate who has done this before and thinks its quicker to leave the box in now, (as i took it out that way)

don't think i can post in the relevant sections as i'm a fairly new member... I thought you could use the 1.6 dizzy even tho i knew about the afm/ecu..

Quickest way:

Have the old 1.6 lump with the donor box side by side to your new lump on the floor. Then just remove a few 16mm and 8mm allen keys pull the box off, and slide it on. This way you don't have the weight of a gearbox against you at the height of the car jacked up!

Did it yesterday and took me ten minutes, and double check your clutch alignment is central by shinning a torch in the whole of the clutch casing and friction plate!

Might have those 1.9 bits up for grabs actually, can let you know this week.
