[trackday_prep] Re-shelled 306gti6

Recommended Posts

crf450

Ive just got round to posting some pictures of my reshelled six I rolled last year at Donington.

I was gutted when I rolled it as the car was a one owner, 46k, full main dealer history mint example before I got my hands on it, anyway when my 205 was off the road I started using it for track work and ended up wrecking it on a wet day at Donington. The car settled on its roof and I had to dig my way out, as the roof came down and squashed my neck I thought safety would be the theme on the rebuild.

When I started re-shelling the car the intension was to put the car together right and make it work well but not waist time on finish but as I got into the car I spent a bit more time and money on it than I first planned and the £50 Xsi farm car that I used a for the shell has ended up look a bit different.

Im dead chuffed with the end result and Ive got exactly what I wanted, a fast car that makes the most of its power and uses its tyres economically, I can just get into it and do lap after lap with minimal maintenance.

I went to the Ring in it at Easter and did an 8min38secs lap with a passenger and hold ups, Im sure on a clear lap it would go round in 8.20 no probs. Im that into the six my 205 is on the back burner and Im planning putting a V6 in with a Maxi conversion for my ring trip next year.

Spec as it is at the moment.

Engine,

Standard Gti 6 engine with Maniflow race system and home made induction kit.

Brakes,

Standard Brakes with 1155pads race fluid and Brembo std replacement discs.

Suspension,

Front Avo 40mm monotube coilovers fitted with 450lb springs,3mm neg camber

Rear.

Tarmac billies, 30mmARM, modified trailing arms with 2mm neg camber.

The cage was out of Silverstone race school car which Ive modded to make it semi structural.

Ill hopefully be getting my Ring laps on Youtube in the next couple of weeks and Ill

post a link from here when I do.

Looks great, really neat, tidy and very funtional.

Just out of interest why did you buy the 30mmARM from?

Also would you be able to modify other trailing arms with 2mm neg camber?

Cheers.

Nice bit of kit, enjoyed keeping with you in the tight opening section of the ring, then you pissed off when gearing and power was needed

Attention to detail on some of the machined parts is awesome :D

Look forward ot seeing you out there at another track day soon.

James

p.s have you changed the fornt springs since the ring?

I like the bonnet catches, been looking at putting some on my alfa after i saw some on a Group N Aston Martin Vantage racecar is Bahrain - couldn't really justify them though as they cost more than my paintjob

Very nice although i would have wanted the extinguisher a little further forward in case of a big rear shunt - could end up being a nice missile pointing towards the drivers back.

Impressive car, loved the machined parts inside it. The sly camera mount looked spot on!

Quick times too ;)

Looks ace Martin, you'll have to get your laps at the Ring on a cd/dvd to me & I'll sort out some hosting for them. ;)

The pictures don't do the negative camber justice, it looks far meaner in reality. :)

Some great little bits that show your attention to detail, as expected from an engineer though.

Graham.

Did you swap the plate over too?

I wondered that also although tbh I couldn't be certain it was the same plate as the red one.

Orate chaps thanks for all the comments,

Dave K, it wasn't that expensive to build, if you allow £750 for my bent six I've spent probably another £3500. I sourced most of the stuff second hand and the stuff I didn't buy I made.

Powers, I bought the 30mm ARB off Ash on the 306Gti6 forum, I've had a couple off him now and they've both been sound. I would be able to modify you some trailing arms but it probably wouldn't be a lot more expensive to buy the fully adjustable kit that SBC supply.

James, I've got the new springs but I haven't fitted them yet, incidentally the springs I was complaining about being miles to soft at the Ring were 300lb and after a lengthy chat with Avo we've now gone for 450lb springs this time, they'll go on before I do Cadwel. Also I haven't forgot about the bells, I'll be in touch soon.

Sam, the runners for the drivers seat mount are designed for Minibus's and I've adapted them to fit with the triangular brackets which you can see on the pics. The nice thing about these runners is they are all aluminum and it you can have the seat fully adjustable, also with half a turn of the locking mechanism the whole seat just lifts out. The passenger seat is fixed. If anyone's interested in these runners which are dead clever and are made really nice I can find out how much they cost.

Phatgti,Fair comment about the position of the fire extinguisher but there wasn't many other places it could go, it went on that side because most tracks anticlockwise and its the passenger side tyres that gets all the stick.

Cybernck/Alan,I've had loads of people ask about the camera mount, it's ideal for the ring as your not aloud to film there, I just pull it down from the roof when I've gone past the marshals standing round the ticket machines and start filming. Might make a few and see if they sell on Ebay.

Graham, PM us your address and I'll post you the discs.

Chris, Ah you noticed the plates, I'll not say much about those.

Paul, as I've said the 205 is sort of on the back burner at the moment, my 2.2ltr engine is still unrun and sits on my engine stand in the garage, I've got a lot of interest in the six at the moment so that's what I'm concentrating on.

Thanks again for the comments :D .

Cheers Martin

You should deffo make a load of those camera mounts up and sell them on eBay - I reckon they will sell like hotcakes :D
