Oil Leak

Recommended Posts

TaffyTim

I went for a track day on monday and was out for 2 sessions and had to finish a session early as i was leaving alot of oil behind me.

Today i spent a couple of hours under the car cleaning all the old oil off and have taken it for a hard drive to get it leaking again so i can see where it might come from.

I originally thought that it was engine oil and not gearbox oil but im not so sure today as it smells slightly petrol like.

If anyone can suggest where its coming from that would be great.

1

Here is the amount of oil dropping off different parts of the car after sitting for a few mins,

2

When you first look at the engine bay you can see the main spray is on the bulkhead behind the gearbox, the engine side of the bulkhead is quite oil free:

3

looking down the back of the gearbox you can see a large pool of oil in the gearbox casting(in the centre far left) and a good colection on the end of the cracked cable, what is this cable?(centre)

4

coming forward on the engine you can see the same pools again

5

coming further around you can see more spraying in the castings(bottom left quarter)

6

from under the box you can see 2 oil tracks

7

Looking up at the AFM, there are a number of different wet points

8

looking a bit to the right

9

The inlet mainfold has oil marks which had been cleaned off earlier, and also down the oil breather pipe there was some fresh oil.

Oil has made its way down to the oil sump, its a shame its on the wrong side of where its supposed to be!

Is there any oil above the head gasket on the engine?. Is the clutch slipping at all?, looking at pic 6 possibly crank seal gone due to crankcase overpressure?

The clutch was replaced last sunday and is working well.

The most oil that i saw by the head gasket was on pic 3, in the top left corner. Other than that i didnt notice any spray above it.

Maybe the daftest question of the day-- but is it engine oil, or has the gearbox been overfilled after clutch replacement, then been flung around by the driveshaft (poss. from the driveshaft seal?)

im going to say that its Engine oil. Its the same colour as the engine oil that is on the dipstick and doesnt smell bad enough to be gearboxoil.

could the petrol like smell of the oil come from blow-by? ie petrol blowing by a piston and mixing with the oil?

cable in pic 3 is the speedo cable, look suspiciously like gear oil if its on that area and you dont have a dizzy.

Ta for pointing out the speedo cable.

There is a dizzy but that is totally oil free.

Odd thing is before the clutch plate broke up every thing was dry as a bone, It's only the track day and high rev's which could be blow by in the crankcase, I'll hopefully see the car and have a better look

The leaking oil has calmed down a hell of a lot, but im thinking that its because the gearbox is running out of oil!

When I was driving the car home today there was a loud ticking/knocking noise coming from the engine bay.

When I jacked the car up and turned the wheels, i traced the noise and first of all thought it was coming from the driveshafts but then it went beak to the clutch area. The noise sounds very metal on metal like when a wheel is being turned.

Is this a noise assosiated with an emptyish gearbox?

ps

I now know how to check the gearbox oil level but its dark and i dont have a garage, so i will check tomorrow after cycling to work
