Sounds like a good idea. Coupled with a XU10 head and a better cam it should be a hoot on a budget.

Buts its better still to use the standard 205 cam isn't it?

There was a good topic asking this last year, maybe a search will find it.

I put an engine together with a cam and a XU10 head all machined by QEP a couple of years ago it won a national rally championship and is still going strong.

To give you an idea how much more power it had we run out of injector time at the std fuel pressure.

Its never been on the rollers but we imagine it has about 130-140 bhp using the std inlet manifold. It would be quite a tool on carbs.

UPDATE!!!

Finaly got the car back to do some more work fit carbs and mappable ign.

Managed to fit it in for a run on the rollers before the carb swop.

128.5 bhp 110 lbs/ft of torque. About what I expected on the std induction set up.

We will see if the carbs open her up a bit more. Mind you the engine is getting a bit tired but will have to do another season funds are low.

ever thought about an XU5J4 hybrid?

I have thought about one of these for a long time. I know of someone who built one for rallying, he mentioned special pistons to get the CR up and thats it, not sure if he used the Mi16 block or not for the oil sprays but the bottom end was just lightened and balanced by all acounts and regularly saw well over 8krpm.

I have an Mi engine in bits that needs a new bottom end, may see if i can get hold of a 1.6 crank and have a dabble i think

I was looking into this. It isn't just pistons you need. There is a rally car around localy that has a reported 220bhp from this sort of set up.

It isnt easy to achieve and would cost a few bob.

Is it silver and his name is Morgan? If so sounds like the same guy i spoke to at Pembrey.

all you need is the right set of pistons to sort the compression ratio issue, the rest is just like tuning any other Mi16, allbeit a little revvier maybe?

Finally finished this little project or not as it is.

On 40's it made 136 bhp and 111 lbs/ft with the std ignition.

There was a problem with the mapped ign which prevented full mapping to take place but the results so far are quite good.

137 bhp no more torque but a better spread the curve looks much smoother however the dip around 3500-4250 is a cam issue and in an ideal world would need looking into by swinging the cam timing.

I would imagine the gains by finishing the mapping would be very slight, but 87 bhp per litre from a lightly stressed 8v rally engine is not a bad effort for what is bolt on mods.

full spec..............

xu10 head

cat cam close to group A spec can't remember the part number.

DHLA 40's

KMS ignition ecu.

Electric power stg
