Lightened Flywheel Too Light?

Recommended Posts

brianthemagical

i've been searching through old posts as the job i was going to do tonight has been stopped due to batteries. among the posts were some about lightened flywheels. from what i could gather mine is rather light. it's 5kg exactly. i believe it is a 1.9 one but is definitely 8v, bought from the wanted section of this forum. I was told it was done by qep. it looks like the back has been machined out to give a flat surface from just inside the rim to 8cm from the centre and then slightly less has been taken off too about 4cm from the centre around the bolt holes. is this safe? i'm slightly nervous at the mo.

thanks in advance.

sounds like the same as my old nova one, and that never let me down.

A photo might help clear it up though as it's kinda hard to visualise...

Seems fine to me. I do them exactly the same. Takes about 2kg off.

It doesn;t look like one of ours. We mill the front out as well as turning the back and then chemically black them.

Be very careful. If your thinking of using it have a very good poke about it and look of anything that looks like a crack forming or any damage. When fly wheels go they do tend to do a LOT of damage and can and have KILLED. I personally would not risk a unknown lightened fly wheel, but then I have seen what they can do.

I thought, what were isn´t much, you could mill off the frontside. Could you give a rough guide, what can be done. Because I will have a go at lightening a 1.6 Flywheel tomorrow.

thanks

thats kind of worrying as i was informed it was, and imay have paid over the odds. the front is standard and it ain't black.

i'll get my chosen engine machinist to have a look and see what he thinks.

i doubt you'll get a guide on a public forum due to people making money from there ability to lighten the flywheels and if they tell you to do something and you do it incorrectly then, as mentioned earlier, death could result.

thanks again for the replies.

Hi I have a lightend flywheel and the difference is noticable, not hugely, but it is there . the only down side is that it stalls when cold but i don't care
