Dead Battery After 3 Days...

Recommended Posts

DanS1982

I fitted a brand new battery to the car last week and due to a fan issue I've not been driving it since. Now, I haven't driven the car or started it but the Battery was reading less than 6v after only 3 days sitting in the garage. It does have a cobra alarm but surely this would not drain the battery that much in such a short period of time??

Prior to having this issue I did take it for a spin with the new battery fitted and the batt light comes on and dissapears when started as it should do so I assume the alt. is working fine.

Any clues as to what may be draining the battery? I'm just not convinced the alarm would do this over such a short period!

Cheers,

Dan

Sounds like a dodgy battery to me, take it back and try again.

I've had dodgy new batterys before.

Is there a test I can do so its conclusive?

dan,

what you need to d is full charge the battery

then

you need to check what the drain is when the engine isn't running,

this will then tell you if something is draining the battery,

i once had a stereo which would drain the battery dead in a short space of tiem, i binned the stereo job done, would last much much longer then

The only thing that could do that though is the alarm!? and i dont fancy ripping that out. I've charged it up, and left the isolation switch off to see if the batt is simply not holding its charge.

I had a problem of the battery draining on my 205 and it wasnt consistent and car always started from a jump start and would be fine. Turned out it was the fuel pump relay sticking, leaving the pump still pumping fuel round the system after the ignition was turned off and dumping the battery. New relay, job sorted.

There are all sorts of odd things that can drain a battery. Various interior lights being a common one, particularly the boot light as it is very hard to know it is on...

I've checked the battery and that seems to be holding voltage fine after a few starts.

I may check out the fuel pump relay theory though, where is this found?

I've been round the car in the garage with the lights off and cant find anything flashing away in the car, only the immobiliser!

black relay by the ecu, lower part of the drivers side of the dash bash board, next to the ECU.

Thanks matey!

I dont think its this as I've only just re-wired it all but used the old relay so who knows! Worth a look I guess!

You really need to do a battery leakage test. Wire an ammeter (sp?)between the battery and the +ve lead. If the battery is genuinely being run down by an eroneous load you'll see that on the ammeter. IMHO you shouldn't see more than 0.25 Amps from a healthy car when everything's turned off. Anyway, you can very easily find the problem by pulling fuses out one at a time until the problem (as seen on the ammeter) goes away.
