Guest justinhincks87 Posted January 24, 2007 Hi there what does the sump spacer on the 1.9 actually do? can you put it on a 1.6 block?
notamondayfan 44 Posted January 24, 2007 it gives extra depth to the sump to accomodate to a larger crank. dont see any advantage using it on a 1.6 at all.
pug_ham 245 3 Cars Posted January 24, 2007 Its not just a spacer plate but also a stiffener so that there is less block flex. The 1.6 sump is also slightly deeper than the 1.9 one by about the size of the spacer. I ran my 1.9 with a 1.6 sump for about a year with no problems. IIRC Miles has the 1.6 sump on his CTi with a 1.9 in & no spacer plate. Graham.
Miles 331 1 Cars Posted January 24, 2007 As Graham's said it's not a spacer plate, It's there to help the block from flexing as the skirt's the weakest point, All the 1.9 405's and BX's run the 1.6 type of sump, The Mi block's have extra ribbing on too for this reason. The crank doesn;t go anywhere near the sump or you;d never get a Dry sump kit to fit. But if you do want to chnage the sump use either a 1.9 Alloy sump or the S16 Alloy sump
TB_205GTI 1 Posted January 25, 2007 But if you use the alloy sump it takes ages to get the oil warm - especially if you have the original 1.9 oilcooler w/o a thermostat..
pug_ham 245 3 Cars Posted January 26, 2007 But if you use the alloy sump it takes ages to get the oil warm - especially if you have the original 1.9 oilcooler w/o a thermostat.. Simple fix, if you use an alloy sump, remove the oil cooler as its redundant. Also, if you use an Mi16 alloy sump you don't need a spacer/stiffener plate as the sump is deeper. Graham. Ahl 4 Posted January 26, 2007 Also, if you use an Mi16 alloy sump you don't need a spacer/stiffener plate as the sump is deeper. The BX 16v engine I have came with an alloy sump and spacer plate. Are 406 mi16's different?
pug_ham 245 3 Cars Posted January 26, 2007 405 Mi's do have the spacer fitted as well but imo you don't need them on a 1.9 as the sump is deeper. (Mi takes 5.5l & 1.9 GTi takes 5.0l of oil). The alloy sumps are considerable stiffer than the steel ones also but less damage resistant. Graham.
