as far as I know the 1.6 stuff only fits 1.6 hubs, afaik diesel brakes will be ok and i think most 306 will fit on no bother.

You'll need 1.9 disks to match the base model hubs, and you can use either 1.6 or 1.9 calipers.

Did a 1.9 front brake conversion (1.9 disks and 1.9 calipers) onto a friends 1.1 a few weeks back, and it made a big improvement. Pedal travel was slightly longer than before, but not excessive

Yep that's the setup I have on my XS (1.9 discs with 1.6 calipers)

I'm going for 306 hdi brakes soon though.

I am going to try and fit the 306 hdi brake set up to my xs. What size wheels will i need to fit? Will the 1.6 gti wheels fit?

306 S16 brakes will fit base model hubs fine, and they'll just squeeze under 14's

Are the S16 brakes hard to find? I can pick up a set of HDi calipers and discs for £75.

not silly at all, decent tyres and brakes are an excellent upgrade

you could got a bit further and get some ate power discs for your 1.9 setup and some decent mintex m1144 or ferrodo ds2500 pads.

306 hdi brakes should be the same size as the S16 ones at 266mm.

Do the original lines git the 1.6gti caliper and HDi caliper?

Are there any uprated braded hoses for the front of an XS, are they the same as the GTi?

Yes to both questions, the original front hoses should fit the hdi calipers but might be a bit short on full lock & you should be able to get a braided hose set for the XS.
