Help, Lower Ball Joint Failure (with Pic)

Recommended Posts

Edp

Holy cow that looks funking scary. If I were you I would be replacing that hub for sure. It looks like an original pug part wishbone so it must have been the hub that screwed the ball joint.

A hub from a dealer would be stupid money. Worth seeing how much but you could find one in a scrappy.

205 1.9GTI and 309GTI hubs are the same, but 1.6GTI are different and non-GTI are different again.

ah! apologies, further investigation found the following - 3646 20 (left) and 3647 20 (right) are for all XU 309's (not just GTI's) and 1.9 205's without ABS

(only difference for ABS is the mounting for the ABS sensor, part numbers as above but ends in 45)

all other 205's and 309's use 3646 17 (left) and 3647 17 (right)

Part nos for the hubs has changed I had to replace the N/S hub on mine two weeks ago. The dealers only supply the hub for the 1.9 gti with ABS now. The no is 364750 (N/S)if my memory serves me.

Price 105 quid Different design looks a lot stronger!!

Some one had spread the coupling in the past to remove the ball joint. After putting my new clutch in, tightened pinch bolt to set torque SNAP half the lug broke away!!!

Needed the car to get back on duty that night, luckely Tom Garners in Manchester had one other wise I'd have been F****D

difference is the driveshaft inpuits and also caliper mounts/offset.

306 ones do fit but you need to watch the locating lug on the strut isnt too wide for the hub when it clamps up.

Euro car parts sell the following:

OMCAR n/a 629735021 FRONT HUB - WITHOUT ABS PEUGEOT 205/206/306/309/405/406

Front Hub

I am guessing this is the right part as its non ABS?

However I checked the hub with a micrometer top and bottom and it was the same, so I am not sure if the hub needs changing?

The car is back up and running now, new wishbones on both sides, new bolts through the hub mounts onto the ball joint, new CV boots all round and also changed all the pads whilst I was at it.

The car will be going into a local specialist next week for some TLC and to have a look at a few other bits (oil pressure sender gone OOS and exhaust rattle). I will get him to check the hubs over - but I dont fancy the same failure again as I expect I will be going a lot faster next time!!!

The hub from ECP likely to only be the driveflange section (middle of bearing where driveshaft fits through) so ask before you order. You'll also need a new wheel bearing & the driveflange from your current hub if it is the hub carrier that you need.

Have you checked the balljoint hole is perfectly round & hasn't gone oval? Personally I'd change the hub for safety after what happened here.

Graham.

Almost certainly to only be the driveflange section - the correct name for the part you need is the hub carrier (the bit the wishbone, TRE and strut connect to) rather than the hub (the bit the wheel bolts to), but most people selling them second hand sell them both as a single ready to fit item and call it a hub.
