Top Stud Sheered

i got a bit carried away tightening up one of the strut top studs when i fitted my strut brace.

it's sheered off, and i wondered if its safe still?

i havent done any suspension work yet so dont really know how its all pieced together but is there anyway to replace the bolt?

Yep exact same thing happened to me when fitting a slut brace ( probably many others too! ) its soft as sh*te to drill out and replace with a meatier nut and bolt arrangement.

Yes it can be replaced, but you will need to take the whole suspension strut of the car (if it's a 205, don't know about others).

The top mounting has the three studs welded into it. I wouldn't say it was an immediate danger as the three studs don't have alot of load on them (they are a small diameter) but I would get it replaced.

May as well just get another one if you are going to remove the struts anyway. It will be fine with two though.

Yep or keep the pans and replace all the flimsy bolts with some nice big ones welded from underneath.

Mine too - you can get a bolt in from underneath with a bit of fiddling if its not too long.

Tis fiddly isnt it, especailly if you try a too long bolt first!

 

Id guessed it would fail without it:)

tis not mine went through with only two on each strut , until i drilled them out and put nuts on them, might just have a really nice mot tester though

You don't need a torque wrench, just some mechanical know how and feel for how much torque you're applying.

 

I think most people who aren't trained mechanics or who have been shown how have done the top mount studs up too tight.

I watched a mate snap a stud when he fitted his strut brace, it was because he tried to fully tighten the first nut before fitting the next two. He should have fitted them all and progressively tightened them so at no point was one stud taking all the strain.

nah, you lot are hamfisted and dont own torque wrenches they're only a tenner

 

Pleaase don't rely on a torque wrench that cost a tenner! A ratchet that costs a tenner is pretty much disposable in my opinion! (and that's an opinion gained through using/breaking a lot of cheap tools )

Well I am a certified MOT tester and I would fail it on it!

Mine passed 3 Mot's with only 2 studs on one side! I've replaced it now though

I think the emphasis was on 'pugrallye' would fail it, if HE saw it:)

 

Not really worth the risk IMO for half hours work to fix it.

Some 306's only get 2 bolts from the factory, rather than 3, would you fail that?
