Engine Conversions/companies?

Recommended Posts

Pete C

I know this topic has probably been covered a gazillion times, so apologies...

I've recently bought a Peugeot 309 GTI Goodwood for a rather bargain price on ebay, pics here if anyone's interested :D

Initial impressions are that it handles really very nicely even compared to my 205 GTI, but it needs more power to carry the extra weight, so I'm considering adding some extra valves B)

I want a professional conversion so I can drive-in/drive-out, and have some comeback if it goes wrong. So which engine do I get from which one of the multitude of companies out there

Mi16 / XSi / S16 / GTI-6?

Ecosse / Pug Performance / Hi-Flow Heads / Spoox Components etc?

Are there any issues with catalytic converters/MOTs if I go for a newer engine? Which engines weigh more/less?

Any suggestions/experiences appreciated ;)

First off, i wouldn't go to the conversion specialists, as they charge not just alot of money but absolutely over the top prices, don't give you the peace of mind in talking to them about what they're doing as they don't have the time of day for you, and generally i think if you go to a smaller garage/ mechanic that is willing to do the conversion you'll get better advice, giving you a better understanding of what they're doing, just generally better service, and of course, a cheaper price. I know a perfect company, if a little far from you, he specialises in these types of conversion and loves take on jobs like this. Not one of these faceless companies that you don't know who your money's going to, an excellent and personal service, will talk you through things and let you know all your options and lets you know of any routine maintenance that should/could be done while doing a particular job, very friendly guy, is currently mating an Alfa twin cam engine to a Skoda transaxle -has had conversion plates made up etc for it, and is fitting it into a Banham Porsche 365 replica for a customer. I know he's picked up the car etc if need be before for customers! I think this becoming a rarity of mechanics/garages now, but should be how things are done, how they used to be. ;)

Engine wise, depends on your budget, you can look at it many ways, find a nice low milage GTi6 that is now the way to go obviously, but pay more for it, and it is a heavier engine, and a little more involved to convert, secondly, and easiest (my choice) If you can find one, then ideally source a rebuilt Mi for a good price, or buy a known good low milage one, or even find a cheapy and have it rebuilt. I say this as most likely they'll all be high milage and tired by now. Similar with the S16, and is heavier, although not by alot, and wouldn't be as bad in a 309 anyway, will see similar high miles, and have a few things that i would ditch anyway, eg. the ACAV inlet system, although works well when it works, alot to go wrong etc. XSi engine is pooh standard, with circa 135bhp, so not worth touching IMO.

MOT wise, not a problem, Emissions go by the eldest out of car or engine etc, therefore they wouldn't even have to know about it, will be tested as normal. ;)

Oh, and there's always the search function to give more opinions and insights. :D

HTH!

Edit: beaten by Miles!! :D

their are pros and cons to all the engines mentioned.the mi16 is the lightest yet the oldest but its really tuneable yet its known for its oil surge.the later mi16 with the cat has less power than the earlier mi16

the s16 has an iron block which makes it heavier than the mi16 but its a newer designed engine ,some of the guys on here have tuned them to go really well too.i have the gti6 in my 205 its got an iron block and is a relatively modern engine it makes the most power as standard.

i do enjoy driving my gti6 its a good mix of power and torque, yet im sure the mi16 drivers will enjoy theirs too.

i couldnt comment on the other engines as i havent tryed them in 205 form

as for commenting on companies to carry out the conversion im sure alot of the guys of here could offer their services and carry out some good quailty workmanship i dont think youll have to look to many miles away to find a good man to carry it out

cheers gaz

there's also the 2.0T engine...150bhp standard, but with the boost up you'll see 200

I do engine conversions as part of my business. The link in my signature shows the conversion that was done on my own car last year before id started up on my own, however gives a good insight into my workmanship. Although I tend to specialise in Peugeots, its not all I do, currently starting on a Ford KA RS-Turbo conversion among other things.

Anyway if you want some more information or a bit of a chat, drop me a PM. ;)

Ecosse / Pug Performance / Hi-Flow Heads / Spoox Components etc?

None of the above.

The search function will tell you the people on here that will do a better conversion for substancially less. I'd go for the gti6 if I were in your shoes.

As it's more of a normal hour now,

Depending on the month of your car depends if it needs a CAT if using it with a newer (93>)engine, I can tell by the chassis number against the DOT records, When I MOT'd a K reg 205 even thou the Reg was after the CAT law came in the chassis number (Which they go on) the car didn;t need it

Shame you missed Dino's old engine as this was a steal at the price, You need to rebuild 99% of the Mi16 engines now as they are at least 14 Years old now (even thou there's lot's of 85k mile ones advertised, LOL), S16 engine's again are 10 Years old and the GTi6 is a good choice as it's the most current engine out of the lot.

I;ve run both Alloy and cast block engine's in a 205 and unless your using it for out and out track work either choice is fine, I;d go for the 2.0 version myself as it give's more torque.

Sounds like the GTI-6 engine is the one to go for... which gearbox would everyone recommend using? I think the 1.6 'box might be a bit short, the 1.9 a bit long, but maybe the Mi16 one is just about right? :)

Miles, you have PM ^_^

agree with miles on the magical "85k" figure! why is it they all do this mileage then get ripped out HMMM??

id definetly go with a gti-6 conversion if you have the funds, the 309 has a bigger engine bay which helps a bit with inlet manifold/radiator issues, the only arse is the wiring if you havnt done it before (and the revcounter/oil pressure gauge)

another thumbs up for Dan (taylorspug). He has a lot of expreience in the industry and has first hand experience of being a motorsport technician working for the larger companies you HAVE all heard of.

I used to do a lot of conversions for people, dont have time anymore so everyone who contacts me gets forwarded straight to Dan, hes a top bloke too, not a bloody odd ball.
