Gti Brakes - Front/rear Split ?

Recommended Posts

Turbo7379

Tonight I was stripping out the old steel brake pipes off my track car project in preparation for fitting new copper pipes & goodridge hoses . I discovered that the brake system is split diagonally instead of front/rear . I thought all GTI's were split front/rear . I thought maybe this car been connected up wrongly but all the pipes at the master cylinder look like the original ones .

The car is an e-reg 1.9 GTI .

1.9's are split diagonally.1.6's are front to back usually.

Yup, that's right

Base models = 4 line, diagonal split with compensators on the slave cylinders

1.6 GTi without ABS = 3 line, front/rear split with compensator in engine bay

1.9 GTi without ABS = 4 line, diagonal split with compensators by fuel tank

Thanks guys .

I'm piping it using a single line to the back wheels via a bias valve & hyd handbrake . Is it OK to use this master cylinder , splitting it front/rear & blank off the unused port ?

I'll probably eventually fit a new master cylinder , is it ok to use a 3-port 1.6 GTI one or is it a different size ?

1.6 and 1.9 GTi MC's are both 20.6mm

You can use the 1.9 GTi one just fine if you blank the unused port off and swap the pipes around to give a front/rear split
