Gti6 Belt Tensioning

Recommended Posts

pugpete1108

guys just getting round to fiiting a new timing belt on my gti6 but in the service guide is says i need to fit a seem meter? to check the correct tension on the belt.

is this a nescessity or do any of you lot know a cheaper and easier way of checking (belt travel or something) . failing that does anyone have a tester i can rent for a day?

also does anyone know what size the locking pins are for the crank and camshafts by any chance i am sure that someone mentioned they were stepped down on the cam pulleys.

cheers in advance

pete

not neccesary but advisable, doubt many places bar a dealer would have one.

I used drill bits to lock the crank and camshafts and tensioned it by hand.

Don't quote me on this as I did it while ago but I read somewhere that if you can twist the belt through 90 degrees then that is about right.

Have a look at the guides on the the 306gti6 website...

yeah i have got them two guides and that is where it says to use a meter.

so you din't use a meter on your belt? and yours has been ok?

i kind of guessed that it would be for a specialist only as i think they are fairly expensive to buy

Most hand tension the belts and have no issues.

The biggest thing to be wary of timing the 6 engine is the dampered bottom pulley! the rubber twists and the lock pin hole moves round.

This then results in an incorrectly timed belt and a few bent valves.

If the holes line up perfectly when the old belt is in place you should be ok. If not replace that pulley.

hmmmm , i see what you mean i didn't notice this when taking the belt off ;) , is there any visible way of checking if it has moved or even checking the correct position of the crank?.

what position should the crank be in when the pin is in place? what degree btdc should it be on cylinder 1?

the rubber looks ok just a couple of small hairline cracks on one side of it but it doesn't look like its twisted.

any idea where to get a new one from?

If you're in any doubt whatsoever get a new one!

They don't look twisted when they let go usually as the rubber just slips round on the pulley.

They are £55 but totally worth it as timing it even slightly out is a recipe for disaster! Many a 6 engine now taps like hell because it's been mistimed in this way.
