Smoking 1.6 Engine... Do I Need A Rebuild?

Recommended Posts

Guest Gigsy74

Hi,

The engnine on my 1.6 CTi has been smoking for some time and I think it's time I did something about it.

It tends to smoke once it's warm rather than from cold. Having read a few threads on here, it seems that it's most likely to be the piston rings rather than the valve stem seals that are the problem?

There are no knocking noises or any other worrying sounds and it still pulls very strongly so I'm wondering what my options are: is it worth a full re-build or can I just get away with having the piston rings relaced?

Any idea what the likely costs are for a) and engine rebuild, :) just doing the piston rings, c) new/replacement engine?

I recently moved to Wantage, Oxfordshire so if there is anyone on this forum that could do the work or could recommend a decent garage let me know.

All and any advice is more than welcome.

Cheers

Hi

I can't advise on specific probelms with your car but I live in Wantage and recently had a cambelt change etc. done by Storm Autos in Witney. They are Peugeot specialists and came highly recommended. They did a great job on my car and are very decent blokes as well.

how much old does your engine eat? if that is too much (for you) you then HAVE to do something. if that's not too much smoke and you decide the oil consumption is ok, you may wait.

if that is only the piston rings, depending on your mileage you may only hone your cylinder and fit new piston rings, or take everything out replace your pistons for the next size up and have your cylinders rebored to the next size too.

but as long as you open your engines I would recomend to do things properly (re-bore, and replace pistons).

while you are here, and if you can afford it, you may replace the valve stem seals too...

Any Idea when the last time if ever did the motor have its head off. Because it maybe a simple job of renewing the valve stem seals.

The best thing to do would be, find someone to do a compression test and if that proves to be OK and the compressions are good, then it may need just new valve stem seals. Cause the compression test should show whether if the rings or bores are bad with low compressions to cause your burning of oil.

But the head needs to be removed to do this and its advised to get the head skimmed before putting it back on your motor.

Also one final thing, theres a link somewhere on this site with instructions on re-torquing the head bolts, not the Peugoet way or you could pull the threads in the block.

good luck

I only bought the car a year or so ago, so I've not idea if or when the head was removed. The compression/leakdown test sounds like a good idea... think it's best left to a garage to do the head work as I've not had much time on my hands after the birth of my daughter! :)
