Help Needed

Hi everyone, this is my first post on here. I am very new to the 205 gti as i have been a Mk2 Escort driver for many years but have got fed up with chasing rust. I have just bought a lovely 1.6 gti 1989 f reg and have a few questions.

1: After fitting a new master cylinder, brake servo and renewing the fluid, I now have a lovely pedal feel however when braking hard the rear wheels are locking up - is this a 205 gti trait or is something wrong??

The car is stopping in a straight line and quickly - this car will be used on a track and would like to know that the brakes are safe!

2: This may be a common problem, but the heater/fan dash dial is in op - I have changed the rearstat in the passenger footwell but this has not cured the problem - any advice??

3: Any recommendations for a good quality oil for track days?

Many thanks

A very warm welcome to the forum..

Don't think you have stopped chasing rust just because you have a 205 :D

The locking rear brakes are most likely down to the compensator (or lack of..) It's a big drum shaped object on the 1.6 in the rear brake line that can be found down by the gearbox attcahed to the chassis leg. They're often rusty. Some people remove them if they pack up as often they stick closed and cause low braking effort at the rear.

Note that 1.6 drums in good fettle work very well and being such a light car, especially at the back, it is not hard to lock them, even with a good compensator.

The heater fan is most likely seized bearings on the motor. It's easy to get to. Look under the dash from the passenger footwell, slip out three screwas and it is in your hand. The bearings can often be released with WD40 and they will soldier on for a bit longer until they start to squeak and howl before seizing again.

I'll leave the oil question to others.

Enjoy the Pug. The 1.6 is an absolute hoot

Jim, many thanks for your quick reply, i will have a look at the compensator ( or lack of) and will get the heater motor out to see if its seized.

You are right about the car being a hoot to drive, missing the powerslide stuff from a mk2 Escort but have heard that the 205 has a tendancy to lift of oversteer!!!!! so that should be fun on the trackdays.

Regards

Paul
