AJC 0 Posted October 10, 2006 Basically, im new to Pugs, apart form my 106 gti form 3 years ago i do have an escort Cosworth but im a bit bufty, so not wanting to use it over winter, soo.... i bought a 205 gti, now the car handles awesome, it is standard btw, but it doesnt seem to pull as well throught the gears, and is a tad lumpy and gutless, i think it maybe the Air flow meter, but dont want to blow 130 quid on one to find out it aint any ideas people? welshpug 1,627 Posted October 10, 2006 check the ignition timing and vac advance, a good service may be on the cards as well as a cambelt if you dont know when they were done last. and afm will affect the car in a more drastic way than just being a bit flat. Grim.Badger 15 Posted October 12, 2006 (edited) aaah, try an engine temp sensor Try this first, it's a blue plug near the thermostat (although it's probably brown/grey like most things under a 205 bonnet ). They're £10 from people like GSF, do a search on here for the part number as GSF stock it as a BMW part. If this has gone the car will stink at idle. Once this is sorted, if it is the temp plug, change the oil (as it's likely to be contaminated by petrol) and give the car a damn good run in, then it wouldn't hurt to change the oil again to make sure you've flushed out the engine properly. If it's been really bad then you may have to change the plugs as well, although if they're new I'd have thought you'll be able to get away with keeping them. The 1.9 feels guttless and strangled on 95ron. There could of course be other problems, for example the clutch was slipping when I first got mine which I didn't realise for a while until it started to get bad . It could even be a collection of problems as simple as a restrictive exhaust, blocked air filter, old ignition components etc. Mine stangely felt a lot better when I changed to old knackered split induction piping for some new ones, I can only assume that the old pipes were collapsing when the engine was under load, and therefore restricting flow. Also both of my pugs have needed a sort of run in period to get the best out of them because the last owners hadn't serviced them properly and both had been sat around for a while not being driven. The lumpyness could be an air leak. One of the simplest places for lots of air to get in is through one of the bolt holes in the intake manifold, such as the one that is meant to hold the oil filler cap in place; it's common for 205s to lose this bolt. Rob_the_Sparky 9 Posted October 16, 2006 Mine was tuned for 95 when I first got it and it certainly flet flat and slow. I can't say that about it now. This would be my number one starting point... Also a lesser effect but none the less good is to get the injectors cleaned. On the two engines I've had done it makes it feel stronger at high revs. Idle mixture will probably be wrong but this is best adjusted once ignition timing has been done as can the idle speed. AFMs can be cleaned, refurbed or replaced with 2nd hand items for zero or small amounts of cash. The exhaust down pipe should be two D shaped pipes welded bck to back for the first half or so of the pipe. Cheap replacement pipes are not and can loose you power as a result. ARVIN downpipes certainly come with the split, not sure about others. 205 idle is never good even when right but 90% of cars can be improved with some tweaking... j_turnell 134 3 Cars Posted October 16, 2006 Personally i'd check or change the following: - cam timing, worth doing the belt and tensioner anyway (also water pump) it could be out by a tooth maybe. - Ignition timing, set it for 97 ron. - replace plugs, leads, dizzy cap, arm, oil,filter, air filter. - get it on a Co machine and get the mixture set, after the service. - Replace ecu temp sensor. - check for cracked exhaust manifold. - clean all air and induction pipes including throttle body and possibly inlet. - Worth takin the SAD off and cleaning that out too for cold mornings. - check for air leaks, a search will give you the common places.
