Gibbo GTI 0 Posted October 7, 2006 I need to replace the drivers side front hub as the threads on 2 of the bolt holes are shot on my 1.6 GTI. Does the bearing need to come out to replace the hub flange? Is the flange just held on with the hub nut?
Guest kevjones36 Posted October 7, 2006 What bolt holes are stripped, is it the brake disc ones, if so i have just had mine re-threaded with a 6mm tap cost around £2.
Gibbo GTI 0 Posted October 7, 2006 Unfortunately its the wheel bolt holes.
Guest kevjones36 Posted October 7, 2006 The hub is fastened on with the big nut, you maybe lucky and get the hub to pull out of the bearing, put chances are that the inner part of the bearing will come out aswell, onto the back part of the hub. If so, new bearing, Just replaced my bearing, a few hours, chisel and a mallet and the old outer bearing case to get the new one in, alot of chew, but wanted it done on the cheap. Guest rick03054 Posted October 7, 2006 Why not just replace the whole hub and carrier? You have to take it off to get the bearing and hub (flange) out anyway.

Guest rick03054 Posted October 7, 2006 Well I have one, but unfortunately I think the bearing's seized. It only turns a little bit then jams up. There is an old driveshaft in it at the moment but that shouldn't make a difference, your welcome to it if you want it for the hub, just get a bearing and find a garage to press the old one out and the new one in. Gibbo GTI 0 Posted October 7, 2006 Cheers mate, appreciate it. This car has cost me a fortune in the last 4 weeks. Almost a brand new car. Where abouts do you stay?
Guest TSL 333 Posted October 7, 2006 I got the full thing from a scrappy, £10 and it was a piece of piss to change over. It was reasonably easy as well. I had stripped 2 threads as well - nightmare eh!!!
