Brake Calipers And Disc Protectors

Recommended Posts

bitchass 205

hello,

I have started to strip down my rear beam, how do i take off the disc protectors? also how does one remove the calipers?

I've mislaid my haynes manual so don't know what i'm doing.

Help!

Michael.

calipers would be 2 large bolts from the rear, and the disct covers have 4 5mm allen bolts from the rear side also.

Brake pipes have an 11mm union into the flexi hose to the caliper, the pipes will most likely be rusted to the unions so they will twist up, snap & need new ones.

I'd be quite shocked if the back plates allen bolts come undone as well.

thought as much, just wanted to check. The pipes are really rusty, also what is the best way to clean surface rust? the main part of the beam is rusty but i think thats only cause it was left outside. Doh!!

Also how can i tell if the discs are sized in the calipers?

If you can rotate the wheel, then the disc isnt seized in the caliper.

If the pipes are really rusted, replace them!

There aren't any wheels on the beam, i have tried to turn the whilst holding the beam but it won't turn. If they have been stood for a while is it just a case of freeing them up or are they knackered?

The pipes are now beyond use anyway, i had to bend them out of the way when tring to get the caliper off.

they normally free up, the bugger question is wether the bleed nipples are seized.

That doesn't sound good, with no pressure in the system or handbrake connected they should be free but if they are rusted you should be able to turn them with a little force.

Have you got the caliper off? If not try to get the pads out seperately & then the disc should turn.
