The Race Is On....

QEP are trying their best to get the following done in time for Anglesey on the 17th Sept:

  • New double valve springs
     
  • Replacement PR inlet valve (current one is slightly bent)
     
  • Replacement cam, current one is market, so putting a new one i nthere, Matt is recommending a change to 4900343 rather than the current 4900340 to get me some more power top end.
     

 

 

Thankfully the piston isn't damaged significantly, just a little scratch i'm told

 

 

 

Trying to get a touch up map done at the RR before the track day.

 

 

Fingers crossed...

340 to 343 , more duration , more lift !

 

Has Matt indicated what potential increases you will see ?

yes i'm due some luck, i was expecting the worse regarding a damaged piston, and them not being available anymore got me worried about a new set of forged items. Thankfully the spring terminally failed at very low revs. SO i'm starting to get a bit of luck :D

 

No preduction of extra power, but i'll go back with shorter trumpets as per DB's recommendation so we'll see what happens. Let's hope he's right

 

With it making peak power further up the rev range, it would be nice to get the power DB predicted which was ~175

Due to a change in plans the following are for sale.

 

* 1.9 8v engine, totally standard 100k miles, in excellent condition - have a recent graph giving good standard power, ideal base for race engine.

 

*Mi16 block with caps & oil spray bars

 

*Longmans steel one piece valves, standard size

 

*Box of new gaskets, bearings (most parts to finish rebuild of engine)

 

*Catcams 4900343 cam with all Catcam valve gear to suit (springs, retainers)

 

*Mi16 pistons/pins and liners (webbed type)

 

*1.9 8v box, all gears good.

 

*1.6 8v box, history unknown.

 

 

With the right head and induction there is 190bhp sitting here in new boxes.

What compression did you plan to run with the 4900343 ? I''m currently running 11.25:1, but am investigating does this need to increase slightly to accomodate the wilder cam. I can't go too far as I have cast pistons. I was thinking nearer to 11.4:1. Can you get gaskets that are in between the mi16 and 205 gti height ?

 

I'm over at QEP later to measure my ignition leads to get some custom magnecor ones made up (I have cheapo temp halfords ones in there currently) so i'll have a chat with Matt

Can you get gaskets that are in between the mi16 and 205 gti height ?

 

What you need is a 1mm copper gasket. Let me know if you want one, I'll put you in contact with the manufacturer. They're approx. AUS$105 + postage.

The race regs stated that i couldnt go more than 2 points higher than standard meaning 11.6:1.

 

Reasonable easy to get with Mi16 pistons and a good skim.

PeterT - I'll discuss that gasket option with QEP, cheers. I did do some research on here earlier anhd Matt was quoted as saying he thinks the copper gaskets are old school compared with composite ones. I'll speak with him soon

not sure about being old school. They're a cheap and easy way to fix CR and squish height problems, especially on wet liner engines. The liner protusion really digs into the copper, reducing the necessity for o-ringing.

oh thats nice to know, i was worried it would stop it sealing as well, esp around the water and oil ways!

 

Sean, would you let us know what you decide on gaskets after speaking to QEP,

Hi Peter,

 

 

I've read and read and I still can't get a good (read simple) explanation regarding the benefits of copper head gaskets vs. normal ones. Care to expand ?
