1.6 Engine Or Not!

Recommended Posts

Revla

Hi all,

Recently bought a G plate Miami blue for my girlfriend, seems good,

only 84k on the clock, idles perfectly, full leather etc.

But it seems a little flat on the power front. I've done the normal

service bits and was going to take it for a rolling road tune.

I then noticed the oil temp didn't rise, and thought it would be the normal manky

lead that runs down the back of the block to the switch on the sump..... but no switch was there!

It has had an engine swap previously by some peugeot specialist or other, so it has the later

plastic cam belt cover...... but does anyone have any pointers to what lump it may be?

Cheers in advance!

Trev

205 1.6 auto maybe? dont think they have oil temp gauges and they make about 90bhp on their original management. A similar engine was in BXs etc too, but I think they probably had a 405 SRI style head.

By 405 SRi head you mean the downdraft type I presume?

The auto 1.6 - different cam etc? Its running 1.6 gti management I think......

(I'll have to check the ECU). :)

yeah I'm pretty sure all the BX/405 1.6s had that style head, so wouldn't be usable with a GTI inlet manifold (which I assume yours has?)

yeah pretty sure its all different (cam, smaller valves etc) and it runs single point injection so theres no need to check the ECU, if it has a GTI inlet etc then its running GTI management.

I'd say its more likely you have a bottom end, or possibly just a sump off a low end engine. Lacking performance could be unrelated to the missing oil temp sensor, have you advanced the distributor at all? Also the AFM can lose a lot of power when its not working right. Its worth compression testing it too.

Yeah, looked like the all to familiar sight of a GTi lump and loom!

Haven't adjusted anything as yet.... will have a play at some point soon - just it runs so so smoothly I don't want to ruin it!!!

Cheers!

mark the distributor so you know where you started then advance it until it just pinks then back it off slightly, chances are someones retarded it for unleaded at some point, so if you advance it with a tank of decent fuel you'll get a load of power back.

I'll be giving it a bash this weekend!

Cheers for your help.......

Try having a look at the engine identification plate if it's still there - on the front of the engine at the timing belt end (facing the front of the car)

If the engine type is XU51C then it is indeed the engine from a 1.6 Auto and the points already mentioned apply. It's also common to find XU52C engines fitted which were never originally available in the 205 These engines look externally just like the XU5J and XUJA engines when they are fitted with the injection system of the 205 but they don't have the oil temperature sensor. The XU52C engine has the same cylinder head and valves as the XU5JA but it has a very much milder camshaft with less lift. If you have either of these engines fitted with the L Jetronic fuel injection from the 205 then the injection won't be callibrated correctly for the engine and you'll be unlikely to get CO readings below about 4% at MOT time :)

Unfortunately the plate wasn't there.........

Getting the usual 300miles per tank of fuel though, just no pull!

Maybe I'll run it down to my mates garage and see what the exhaust analyser has to say......

pull the rocker cover off and check condition of camshaft lobes.

1.6s are known for eating camshaft lobes.

my old 205 had a recon engine with 40k ish miles done and it felt flat. had a look and found the camshaft was knackered.

not sure why your sump doesnt have the temp sensor in it unless the engine is from an auto 1.6 or 1.6 309 as suggested.

Classic one on these is the dizzy diaphragm is kaput. Pull the pipe off the bottom of the throttle body that goes to the dizzy and suck on it. If you can suckm your diaphragm is knackered. These are about £20 (less with PSOOC discount!) from the main dealers.
