mishu 0 Posted June 25, 2006 Hello everyone, I was wondering if it's possible to switch the non-GTi instrument panel (I have a 1.1 model which has a clock, tacho and fuel indicator + all the red lights above it) and can get my hands on the 1.6 GTi instrument panel. My question is what changes are required to do the switch, what will and won't work? The 1.1 has a carburettor (sp?), so that might be another issue (regarding the rev counter on the GTi). It would be great if I could do the switch, because I might do the engine swap a bit later on (but I first have to check/repair the engine). mishu Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
Guest smokinslim Posted June 26, 2006 By far the easiest way to do this is to swap all the loom thats within the dash. Basically unplug it from the fuse box and everything its connected to. Fit a gti/xs loom in its place, it will plug straight into the fuse box etc, and then you can fit the instruments straight in. Provided your instruments work fine then the rev counter should work stright away. Some of the dials wont work though, as your engine wont have the required sensors. All the important stuff does. Another thing to watch for is with phase1/2 dials, they have different sensors for the fuel gauge and if mixed up wont read correctly. My gauge currently shows i have a quarter of a tank on empty, however the running out light is still accurate. I've always kept this in mind and haven't ever run dry. If you choose not to swap the loom then much rewiring is entailed as the instrument panel connectors differ between base model and gti/xs, plus the wires are in different positions and there's more of them. mishu 0 Posted June 26, 2006 That's good news. Hopefully the GTi I'm getting it from still has all the loom attached to the dash. I'll be going over there next week to strip everything from it (it's already been partially stripped.. no seats, dash, wheels, hubs), but I'll probably be able to still get something useful from it (this will hopefully include the engine as well). I'm really anxious to see what there is left to strip, since the guy who has it (from what I understand) also bought it for parts.
