Rear Drum Is Stiff After Handbrake Is Released

Recommended Posts

Ant

Hi all,

I failed my MOT last week on rear NS brake Binding

Basically, its fine once it gets going, but if you put the handbrake on then release it, the NS rear wheel is a bit stiff when you first try to spin it. Its fine once it works its way loose, but apparently, because its not free spinning straight away, its a fail.

Its running new shoes ( but was doing it on the old ones ) and ive cleaned all the drum. Ive adjusted the shoes etc, but it is still snagging.

Any ideas B)

Cheers

Is the handbrake cable outer damaged at all?

Might be stopping the cable releasing properly. Seen it before.

Graham.

Or could the springs / wheel cylinder be shot and not returning properly when released?

That's what mine last failed on, cable and housing fubar where it clips to underside. Handbrake works and releases when the wheel is turned a couple of revs so don't see wtf is the problem for mot!!!- but "rules is rules"

When mine did that it was the self adjuster inside the drum that had fractured and was jamming the mechanism, nice...

Glad its fixed but yeah it is a mot failure as an mot says that the car is roadworthy and ideally has to be ok for a year, and obviously after a short while the sticking would just get worse untill you were driving down the road with your rear wheel locked up. :P
