Dave87 0 Posted April 15, 2006 hi people i've read throught the rear beam guide and i'm stuck/ want to check i'm on the right track the beam is of the car and brakes etc are of so its just beam bars hubs reamning i have both tox bolts of the certen ends of the bars and the ofset washers out. but the studs on the oposite ends are confusing me. I have taken the nut and washer of and the studs turn there amount and stop both ways. does anything eals need to come out for the bars to come out? Plus i was trying to get the the bar leavers out and hav managed to strip the iner threar of one end and the other end is nackered due to fishing the gay rubber washer out earler. i think i'm on the right track bar the bar leavers but the guid says i can knock them out later/hopefully. the bar is of an e reg 1.9gti so u can emagine the rust etc. i've left the bar to spend the night with about a liter of wd40 and what ever other greas i could find. Any tips views etc (i havn't got a slid hammer yet ) the reason for all the hassel is i'm hoping to recon it. cheers dave
Anthony 1,003 Posted April 15, 2006 If that beam hasn't been apart before then the chances of those bars coming out without brute force is pretty slim in my experience. They will normally come out of the beam end OK, but are frequently rusted solid in the trailing arm end and need either a hydraulic press or a large hammer to free them. If the ARB has been removed from the beam and you've removed the 13mm nuts from each of the studs, then the easiest thing to do is to knock the trailing arms off with the torsion bar still attached - lump hammer and knock them outwards. Once the trailing arms are off the car with the bar stuck in them, either press the torsion bar out, or clamp the torsion bar in a vice with the trailing arm at the top, cover the top with something (ie don't hit the trailing arm directly) and then bash it downwards with a lump hammer - eventually it'll start to move downwards relative to the torsion bar. Anthony 1,003 Posted April 16, 2006 And there out of there!cheers for the reply ended up knocking the bars out by beating the s***t out of the arms like you surgested. Brute force - the solution to so many of life's problems You did take my advice and covered the end of the trailing arm with something before bashing seven shades out of it, didn't you? If you didn't, then you might well have bent the slot that the offset locking washer sits in as it's quite thin and doesn't take kindly to hammer blows raining down on it... Dave87 0 Posted April 16, 2006 (edited) i hit the area on the inside where the bump stops would hit and it brought the bars with ir so i'm now at the stage of getting the inner bearing out from inside the beam any surgestion the guide says to use a pulling device but i havn't got one and don't really want to hav to make one tryed hiting them out with a long pole i found but there not morving and don't wan't to damage the inner beam. ps any ideas on where to get bearing and group N bushes etc and do you rekon its beat to change the trailing arm shafts if so how much we looking dave Edited April 16, 2006 by Dave87
