Road Rally Tyres

Recommended Posts

Hi guys.

I was just getting some new tyres for my road-rally 205, and found that my normal rubber of choice (the A539) has been replaced with the "C-series".

Has anybody tried these on a wet British raod rally yet?

Also, what else do folk use - I'm tempted by the Yoko A021-R - any experience? Perhaps a little extreme for road use?

Finally, any idea if you can get Colway Road plus in the right size (185/60/14) - it seems not but I'm getting conflicting info. What do folk think of these (I know plenty of people who drive them, but not on a 205).

cheers,

Andy

Tweeks list Colway's Road Plus in 175/65/14 as the only 14" fitment

Colway's intermediate tyre is listed in 185/60/14

No experience of the A021R (am using A038s), but would suggest that they're likely to be a bit too much for the road (depending upon your budget) - they wear very quickly and are fiendishly expensive (compared to 539s anyway)

Sorry - slightly off topic, but do you know the name of the A539s replacement?

I'm due to replace a couple imminently and had better hurry up by the sounds of it - they're a great tyre!

The replacement is the C-series

From Blackcircles.com:

C.DriveConsistent Handling - In trials worldwide, the C.drive's key features have been rigourously tested, but particular attention has been paid to the C.drive's role in steering precision and dynamic vehicle characteristics, factors vitally important for driving pleasure and safety under real-life driving conditions. Thanks to a new tread compound and a new 'Full Logic' asymmetrical tread pattern, the C.drive is able to maximize vehicle potential to offer outstanding handling capabilities both in the wet and in the dry. Lifetime Comfort - Comfort should be a top priority when it comes to tyre development - but not at the expense of sporting features. And now, it isn't, because the C.Drive promises to deliver high performance and superb comfort from first to last. Yokohama's experience, research and computer aided design have combined to create a powerful configuration of blocks and grooves for advanced tread stress relief that virtually eliminates uneven tread wear, thereby dramtically reducing noise. Confidence in the Rain - Total driving pleasure derives from freedom from anxiety when coping with demanding conditions. The C.drive takes the wet in its stride with its definitive wet grip and aquaplaning performance. Eye-catching quadruple straight main grooves and lateral sub-grooves are able to flush away water at high speeds, while the newly developed tread compound grips the road surface at the micro level for unbelievable traction.

There is a pic on their website - asymm like the A539, but very different to look at.

Any ideas if the colway inter would be ok for road rallies?

Also - what is a A038 like - I can't find one online at the mo?

:P)

Ah -found the 038. A bit track biased then!

I'd have thought the inter would be OK - they're advertised as a being 'a good tyre for road rallies and track day use'. no personal experience though

they're another R compound tyre, so wear might still be an issue

much cheaper than Yokos though!

Bridgestone RE720's are good IMO. Very good grip wet and dry (good tread pattern for water clearance), and nice strong sidewalls. Not ideal for muddy whites (as for most road tyres) but a fair compromise for predominantly-tarmac events. The wear rate isn't bad either!

I'm a fan of the RE720's too, once they're scrubbed in, but they are quite heavy, about 1-2kg heavier than most.

i have found that the continentals premium contact tyre is by far the best i have ever used in the wet.

I was told that the a539 was replaced by AVS sport. But i'm not sure.

Update:

I bought 2 new Bridgestone Re720 (Potenza) and stuck em on the front (1/2 worn A539s on the rear). Only done a brief drive today into work, and I think on dry tar and concrete they grip notably better than the A539s (which I've had loads of over the years). No real wet experience yet or rallying, but will update once I've done a bit.

Oh yes - they were notably heavier when fitting, and the car did seem to roll a bit less, so those sidewalls may well be stiffer as suggested.

Update.

Very good in the torential rain this AM. MUCH better than the 539s. Slightly more abrupt when they do go, but still controllable, and stacks of grip overall.
