Mac210882 0 Posted March 29, 2006 Hi guys, Can anyone tell me how much of a job it is to remove the windscreen of a 205? Is it a bonded in screen that is likely to be a complete nightmare? Im looking to fit a Safety Devices Challenge Spec cage which involves the removal of both the dash and the windscreen to get it mounted. Does anyone have any experience of this? Thanks Mac

Jonmurgie 2 Posted March 29, 2006 Sean's had first hand experience of trying to remove a windscreen.. and cracking it As far as I can tell it's a b!tch of a job and one probably left to the professionals, or cutting the widnscreen rubber away...
Daxed 7 Posted March 29, 2006 Cutting through the rubber (mind your pinkies) with a sharp Stanley works a treat
paul205mi16 4 Posted March 29, 2006 yeah cut through the rubber to remove and get a new/second hand front windsreen rubber to refit, refiting is fairly easy-just use string or wire that wont snap too easy. Paul.
Paintguy 0 Posted March 29, 2006 I've removed and refitted dozens (literally) of windscreens without bother, but the one on my 205 was a swine! I cracked it taking it out, bought a new one, and cracked that putting it back in! In the end I got the professionals in, and even they said that 205s were definitely one of the harder cars to do! Having said that, I gave Matt a walk-through of how to remove one, and he managed his with no bother. Mind you, if he fell in a bucket of pig swill he'd come out smelling of roses, jammy sod
aeinstein 0 Posted March 29, 2006 right. i took the screen out of my 205 without any idea of what i was doing, and managed to cobble my way through it no bother. and i'm a complete arse. starting from the inside, at the top passenger side corner, i carefully levered the rubber out using a large flat bladed screwdriver, and worked my way about quarter of the way down the screen, levering out a little bit of the screen seal at a time. i then put a wallpaper scraper in to hold the seal out, and worked my way across the top. when i reached the other corner, i worked my way down that side in the same fashion. with an assistant, (which i didn't have but struggled on alone, so it is possible,) carefully lever both sides of the screen out, trying not to flex it at all, lift it clear. replacement is pretty much a reversal of that procedure using copious amounts of fairy liquid, and string round the seal, and if your as lucky as me, you can even re-use the old seal. hope this helps, and if it doesn't, don't blame me! lol al
madspikes 41 1 Cars Posted March 29, 2006 I did mine, it was a right bitch. I cracked it getting it, but I was on my own. If i was to do it again, I'd cut the rubber out, and get a couple of 'helpers' to sit in the front and push with their feet. Whilst someone else slowly unpicks the screen from the rubber from the outside. Take it slow and dont force it too much. I got it a new one back in, in about an hour on my own! Lots of washing up liquid, and swearing! Mad.
steve@cornwall 100 Posted March 29, 2006 from past experience, it depends if you have the gti screen rubber with the extended top lip, or the lesser models that is the same all round . with the gti screen I've never got one in or out without breaking the screen! The lesser ones I've just fitted on in the cti in 15 mins screen fitted in rubber, bottom of rubber located and then string fit up both sides and from corners to centre. I usually cut the rubber off the good screen after booting a screen out at the scrappy and buying a new rubber for pennies! (How much would they charge for a good screen?) I,d always cut out the good screen, just in case, typical "careful" Cornishman! Best of luck whatever you decide. from past experience, it depends if you have the gti screen rubber with the extended top lip, or the lesser models that is the same all round . with the gti screen I've never got one in or out without breaking the screen! Guest BrainFluid Posted March 29, 2006 Last time I removed the windscreen of a car we did this... Removed the rubber and then threaded a piece of wire about a meter long through a hole between matal and screen. Then attached each end of the wire to 2 seperate pieces of wood that we used as handles then we used that to saw through the silicone of whatever it was that was holding the screen on. A bit like when two people use a 2 man saw to cut down a tree but with one of us inside the car and one of us out side the car. Catch my drift? We left maybe half a meter at the top corners in then got 2 more pals to come along with a couple of sink plungers attached to the screen and we sawed through the last bits. Hey , it worked for us! No cracks anyway! Nate.
