Sunroof And Rear Windscreen

Recommended Posts

Guest toby7

Is removing the large slide back sunroof on a 205 gti as simple as undoing all the torx screws underneath the plastic trim from the outside and turfing or do you need to access things from underneath the interior roof lining ?

I was thinking that replacing the sunroof and rear side windows and rear windscreen with thin perspex would save a few kilos. I wonder how much. Has anyone replaced the glass sunroof with flat perspex rather than removing completely. I noticed the glass does have a curve in it but maybe a flat perspex replacement just might fit ?

I've removed the rear wiper and motor, all sound matting except for the front firewall mat and center console, rear spoiler (does nothing) speakers and aerial. Glass and seats are all i want to attend to as I still need to drive the car with some comfort and heating during winter.

Regards

Peter

How do you intend securing the Perspex peice? Are you actually using 'Perspex' or Poly? Replacing the glass with 4mm Polycarbonate apparently saves around 18KG.

You can save a good bit of weight by fitting perspex or polycarbonate windows. It's been covered a few times before and the weight saving has also been posted, try a seach and see what comes up B)

Regarding the sunroof, most people replace it with a plate welded or rivited/glued in place, there isn't really any point in replacing it with perspex!

Thanks all.

Peter

I ripped it all off and used an alloy plate fixed with the torx bits.

does that allow the sunroof to still open?
