Richie-Van-GTi 74 2 Cars Posted February 21, 2006 I changed my starter motor as the old one was getting a tad slow, it never failed but sounded a bit weak. I popped a TD starter in which I know worked perfectly when took off the derv about 1 year ago, it was perfect for a day o two then started failing, so I put another TD starer in which came out about a month ago and again worked perfectly and this done exact the same. So Ive put the original starter back in and guess what, its doing the same. When any off them spin they spin no problems but sometimes they just seem to not start spinning. You can hear them engage but then dont spin. Could this be a fault elsewhere rather than the actual starters as its too much of a coincidence for all of them to be the same and to never sound lethargic when spinning. Oh and when they fail, if I keep trying every few seconds after a few attempts they start.
Anthony 1,003 Posted February 21, 2006 If you mean they go "click" but don't spin, then it's almost certainly the solenoid wiring (most likely the brown multiplug) - do a search as it's been discussed lots of times, including in the past week or two. sorr 0 Posted February 21, 2006 Agree with Anthony, probably dodgy French wiring. I had the same problem and replacing the solenoid wire and brown multiplug has stopped the issue.
Rob_the_Sparky 10 Posted February 21, 2006 In my experience of testing one the problem was between the ignition and the starter, and wasn't caused by a bad connection! I'm a bit mystified as at that point I thought sod it and ran a second wire direct from the ignition to the starter in parallel with the original and it worked ever since. Richie-Van-GTi 74 2 Cars Posted February 21, 2006 Rob, did you run the wire diredc from the back of the ignition barrel (position 3) straight to the solenoid? I might try doing something similar as it happens I have a spare cable running through the bulkhead already
JayCC 0 Posted February 26, 2006 Check the wiring going to the solinoid (try a straight 12v + direct from battery to solinoid to see if it is wiring) Also clean up the earth on top of the gearbox.
e30m3 0 Posted February 26, 2006 (edited) I checked mine in the way JayCC suggests and ended up just running a wire from the solenoid to the igniction and its not been a problem since. Edited February 26, 2006 by e30m3
