Overheated 1144's, And Now They Bind While Hot.

Recommended Posts

Rippthrough

As the title, managed to cook the 1144's earlier, courtesy of a tractor driver pulling out on me shortly after my favorite b-road, cue smell (which still hasn't gone after 6 hours) + smoke. I let them back off after that, but now it seems like ever time I get them warm they start binding slightly - enough to prevent the car from being pushed easily on the flats, although if you give it a shove it'll go. I've checked the MC linkage just in case, it seems OK, anything I've missed? Or do these pads do this when overcooked  ?

haven't coked the slide pins on calipers have you? whip the wheels off and check that they're releasing properly

My MC linkage seemed ok, but the would bind up anyway. Loosen the MC nuts off and withdraw it slightly when the brakes are binding- if the linkage is doing it this should release the brakes off.

Slackened the linkage slightly, which has cured it at the expense of extra travel. Will have to get the fluid replaced, could be that if it boiled (the alloys were almost too hot to touch, never mind the discs!)

If slackening the linkage cured it then that was the problem, sounds similar to mine. If the brakes were binding alot of heat is going to be generated, so i expect the fluid will have boiled, bleed it through again to get some fresh stuff in there.

As for the MC linkage, the Haynes joke book has the exact mesurements for that linkage, as there are 2 adjustable pieces, 1 by the MC, the other on the pedal end. :)

Is this on the front or the back?

Likely to be h'brake mechanism if it's on the back imo

I think hes on about the front. Plus even if its the back, my problems with the MC manifested themselves on the rear brakes only. But yes, if it was the back, then maybe the handbrake mechanism isnt wound back properly or is stiff. Also is this on a 405 or 205?

I've had this a few times on the back - semi seized cables slightly grabbing the brakes - gets worse when hot as everything has expanded

To check, all you need to do is slacken the h'brake adjuster right off (at the lever) and make sure the h'brake arms on the calipers move freely throughout their range of travel - then take it for a run and see what happens

If this cures it, just replace the cables

Checked all the back adjusters and cables, everything is free and moves as it should. I'll replace all the fluid later and give everything you've mentioned another check over

Gah, son's just rung me saying the buggers are still binding, even after backing off the linkage a little. He says it just takes a bit longer now, then the pedal travel slowly decreases until they start to bind. :)
