S16 Engine And 306 16v Engines (mattsav?)

Recommended Posts

Hopefully I should be getting the S16 engine that Jonnie has at his place... As long as all is well!

Maxi is going to drop it in the Sorrento for me, when he stops complaining about his cold, not sure if we will get it done before the South Meet, but it should be done some point in March/April I guess?! Can't wait!

Now, Maximus suggested maybe getting some cams for the S16 lump... I actually think it's probably a bit early to be thinking about upgrades, seeing as the engine isn't even out of the 306 yet, let alone near the 205... But it did get me to thinking...

What are the differences between the GTI-6 engine, S16 engine and the 306 XSi 16v engine...? I'm sure this was covered before somewhere, maybe in the general section, but I couldn't find it...

The reason being, if I was to swap the cams out of my S16, could I then drop the standard ones in my 2l XSi 16v? Basically, are all the cams the same amongst the XU10 16v engine range, except maybe the Mi16, or whats the score with parts interchangeability...?

I've also noticed some S16 heads and GTI-6 heads knocking about and there are always plenty of cams for sale on the 306 forums... I'm not overly interested in upgrading the standard S16 engine, but once the 205 is back on the road, I might take the 306 off the road and give it a mild fettle, and if I was to bag a pair of cams from another, hotter engine, I may be tempted to drop them in!!

Thoughts?!

Crank and block are virtually identical when comparing s16 to any later 2ltr 16v engine, heads are completely different as are most other components. So no, cams won't fit your 306 xsi head.

The S16 cams are almost physically identical to 1.9L Mi16 cams if that helps. The S16 cams are missing the distributor drive notch and the tapped holes for power steer etc. So 1.9L Mi16 cams into S16 heads are fine, but not the other way around.

Maxi and I have been talking about running it on earlier management... We think we might have an Mi inlet manifold, but we aren't sure about loom and ECU... Miles, you got one?

Dom, I have got a few Mi inlet manifolds (we WILL be getting it shortened, you have no choice in that!) as soon as I can get the down the workshop I will go through the stores and see what I have got... I know I have several, ECU's, AFM's, igniition modules and ICV's just dont think I have any looms.....

Yeah, I'm more than happy to get the manifold shortened... If we could use the Mi inlet and the S16 management, that would mike life easiest I guess? Let's have a chat when you have finished this other chaps...

Can't wait now!

Bugger, I just sold a loom and 3 row ECU last night!!

Cams as above. Mi & S16 are the same.

The Gti-6 and XSI are the same.

I've got S16 Inlet only cams on the shelf :)

Ah ha... Might have a talk to you about an S16 cam then Matt... But I should probably get 10 days in Vegas out of the way first and I have about $10k MIA in Houston at the moment, so I don't want to spend it before I get it!!

Interesting on the GTI-6 cams being the same as the XSi... I can get a pair, or even just inlet cam from a GTI-6 fairly easily, with adjustable pulleys and a skim, do we think the standard XSi managment could handle the change?

Danny boy... Interesting... Will talk to Maxi... I think he is helping a chap build an S16 running an Mi manifold and S16 management... That seems like the obvious thing to do at the moment, so lets see how that pans out and if it doesn't go so well, we could just get hold of some Mi 3 row management for my car!

Don't forget the South Meet in a couple of weeks you two!

I think that's the plan as long as Maxi can get all the sensors etc located ok to work with the Mi16 manifold and S16 management...
