Lumpy Idle - Where To Buy... ? (help Please)

Recommended Posts

Guest Az_GTi

Hey all, been a LONG while since I posted here, but at the weekend picked up my second 1.9GTi :) Last one was approx 2yrs ago, since then I've owned a Pulsar GTi-R (cost arm and a leg to run) and a runaround Fiesta (used to try and save up to buy another 1.9)!!! Anyway I'll post some pics soon, I'm a bit of a photographer, have a site here www.ae-photography.co.uk for those who wanna have a look (all motorsport stuff). BTW if your local I'm happy to take a few pics of your car(s). The quality will be good ;)

Anyway, the point of my post. The car has got idle problems, up and down - the usual. I want to replace to the dizzy cap, ht leads and airflow meter as I think these are most likely problem, yes? Question, where is the best place to buy these? Any recommendations? Don't really wanna pay my local dumbass Peugeot garage full prices see ;) Hopefully someone here can help, even look at second hand...

Cheers

Sorry couple more questions I forgot to ask, can anyone recommend where to purchase an uprated air filter / induction kit and front strut brace/bar? Again these are upgrades I would like to carry out as my old ones had these and made quite a big difference to handling.

Thanks again

If the idle is hunting then first of all try giving the throttle body and AFM a good clean with carb cleaner, set the idle speed to around 900rpm warm with full electrical load and check the idle mixture (it's probably too rich). That's cured the hunting idle on most of my 205's over the years...

HT leads and dizzy cap/arm get from GSF (they're both pretty cheap) and get a known good AFM second hand from someone on here - they're silly money to buy even from a motorfactors let alone Peugeot.

The cheapest method i found that help lumpy idle was the following

-purchase a can of carb cleaner from local motor factors (2.50)

-remove all intake piping, afm, oil breather pipes.

-blast everything with carb cleaner and use a tooth brush to remove gunk.

- spray carb cleaner into throttle body, lifting butterfly valve at the same time.

-ensure the screw that holds the oil filler to the inlet manifold is tight (this can be a major source of air leak)

-put everything backtogether making sure everything is tightend up.

If you still have problems i found the following helped:-

Spark Plugs - 10 quid

Rotor arm - 3quid

Dizzy cap - 7quid

HT leads - 15quid

Air filter (standard) - 4quid ish

These can all be had from your local motor factor

I also changed the Coil but only because the old one looked very very old.

I found that changing the ECU temp sensor located under the dizzy cap improved MPG a lot. About 5mpg in my case. Also try a product called D-Tox from halfords. Its 14.99 but is extremley powerful stuff.

As for K&n 57i, www.autofive.co.uk do them. Do have a look on the for sale section though, as alot of spares pop up time to time including everything you have stated. Also have a read into uprated engine mounts. I found these improved the handling of my car by quite a margin! stew205 sell sets on this forum.

Spot on info, cheers fella's :)

Been waiting for the weekend all week so I can have some daylight to actually take all pipework off and give it a thorough carb clean. Made a big difference on my g/f's 306XSi, I'm praying it will do the same for me! If not, I know where to go to get the bits I want

One more question actually, idle mixture - I assume this is a screw, could you point me in the direction of where to find this? A piccy would help but explanation would be fine. My last 1.9 had perfect idle, never any problems so not had to do this before.

Cheers

One more thing just sprung into mind after reading the thread on coolant warning light... Mine flickers all the time yet water isn't running out and is clear, I'm hoping just a shoddy sensor. Question, where about is the sensor - I would like to clean/replace it.

Thanks

The idle mixture scrw is located in the corner of the AFM, with the throttle screw on top of the throttle body. Coolant sensor is located in the header tank - and they are very prone to playing up! I think a new one is about £15 from pug.

Cheers Steve. Had all the breathers and filter off today, gave everything a good clean. Seems a little better now but definately going to buy air filter, dizzy cap, rotor arm, ht leads and spark plugs. Got prices from local factor and all for less than £40 - your estimate was spot on JayCC :( The idle is ok when first started once revving for a bit to get tickover, then it idles bad for a bit (5mins later) but then when its hot (10mins later) its not so bad, only idles up and down a little bit but doesn't stall. I'm hopeful the air filter, leads etc will improve things along with twaeking the mixture. Will do this next weekend :(

Upon removing the filter etc I did notice a couple of things that I wasn't sure about, a random connector (maybe a spare?) and a hose not connected to anything... I took a few pics on my phone:

The hose in particular seems to come from underneath the throttle so must go somewhere... can anyone enlighten me please? :)

Soz for all the questions :P

I'm not sure about the connector, I have the same connector which also isn't connected to anything. My 205 is a phase 1.5 1.6GTI.

The pipe, well I may be wrong, but... there is a pipe one mine which looks just like the one in your pictures. My pipe connects on to the inlet manifold on the right hand side I think. Not sure what it goes to though. You'll find a picture here. Also looks like the brown connector isn't connected on that 205 either.

I'm interested on how to fix the idle problems. My 205 is a pain when it's cold, I have to keep the revs up until it warms up a bit otherwise the revs go from really low to just over 1000 and back low again. I've also got a problem where sometimes the when the car is warm, the idle sticks up at 1500rpm to 2000rpm. I usually find that when I'm sitting at the traffic lights with the clutch down or the car not in gear. A quick tap of the accelerator tends to set it back down to about 1000rpm, but it is starting to get really annoying.

The connector is a diagnostic, it connects to a sensor on the flywheel. Pug used it to hook up their test kit, to sense the revs so it is normal that it is not connected to anything.

The hose will be your vacuum advance, they often fall off (mine are tie wrapped on). Should connect from under the TB to the vacuum advance unit on the side of the dizzy.

Wanding idle is probably either ignition timing or rich mixture (or combination of both), good luck with your tuning...

Me again :) She's running much nicer now, couple more things to do, but much better - thanks for ya help :o

I have a couple more questions I hope someone may be able to help with... When looking at my water rad cap I noticed at the back of it there seems to be a connection without a pipe on it... see piccy....

rad_pipe.JPG

Is this ok, should there be something goin into it?

Also I want to change a front fog light bulb as it doesn't work (one does - they are setup to work on fullbeam), I've got the plate/cover off but how the hell do I get the bulb out / change it? I'm probably not getting something quite simple so please help me out :):)

Where on a 1.9 (as standard) is the toolkit (jack, wrench etc) kept?

One more question (soz), what sort of labour costs should I expect for local garage to fit new cambelt?

Cheers :)

1. This is the overflow, when the pressure is exceeded it will blow water/air out of here to bring the pressure back down. Usually it would have a pipe directing it towards the floor to stop this blowing water all over teh place.

2) They are not fog lights! As correctly stated they are linked to the main beam, this is because they are driving lights (intense long distance beam). Take the two screws off and the lens and back will come off together with the bulb if it is a standard (SIEM) unit.

3) Jack should be under the bonnet, behind the driver's side head light. Wrench I think alsomeant to go there but I've yet to see one that actually is!

4) local specialist used to charge £80 but that was a few years ago.

Thanks a lot Rob.

1) Thanks, mind at ease :( Have fitted a small pipe (tight with cable tie) facing downwards :)

2) Sorted. Was being a bit of a plum with this :( Turns out bulb wasn't faulty it was the connector up by the battery. Have cleaned it up and fitted real tight with a cable tie. Sweet. Cracking full beams now :D

3) Ok thought so. I don't have one then :P

4) Thanks. I've no history of it being done recently, last documented in 99. So will definately have this done :)

Just ordered a 57i kit so will be fitting that next weekend. Also my clutch is very high, it's on it's last legs. I would like an uprated one (full kit). From expereience what would be recommended?

P.S thx again Rob
