2.0 T Turbo actuator and oil drain line

Recommended Posts

Any ideas what is under the braided part of these oil supply and return lines , teflon or rubber pipe ?

Also , i can turn the elbows of the pipes around that outer joint where the crimps of the braided part ends , so seem like it suppose to be like that or it should be solid/rigid ?!

Lower end with copper sleeve , which seems to be press fit into the block drain hole , is not that much of a "tight fit" .. can be twisted and pulled out with not much force so , no sure to either add some loctite thread lock , thread sealer , bearing glue or slap some RTV (previously i've seen people used RTV so i guess it was leaking slightly as well ..)

Next - turbo actuators !

Is there any data about how much to adjust the rod length on these ? and check if they've been tampered with by the previous owners  .. there's no turbo related info in any of the XU10 books which i have .

I've three of those , one with squashed vacuum canister so that one is no good , one with slightly less damaged canister , and one which looks really good kinda like new .

But the adjustment of the rod length is slightly different on them .

.. but wait , there's more !

Oil spray bar - these on 2.0 heads does not seem to have holes in between the cam bearing caps like the ones on the 1.6/1.9 heads .

So worth fitting 1.6/1.9 spray bar with the holes instead or it does not make much difference ?!

Noticed there seem to be more cam lobe wear on these newer engines than the old ones , curious if the "plugged" spray bar is to blame or not .

There's the metal one from '94 XU10J2 NA on top , and plastic variant from '97 XU10j2TE beneath :

The ECU is doing closed loop control with the boost control solenoid valve so you can't set the boost pressure by playing with the actuator like on older turbo engines.

I'd run the spray bar with the holes. No idea about the hoses.

Oh , i see .. will adjust the actuator rod lenght then so the wastegate has little preload , up to a point till I can't spin the flap door with my finger , guess it'll be good like so .

There is some factory yellow paint mark on the rod , so they did some "adjustment" guessing targeting the same as above , closed wastegate with just a little bit of tension .

Hoses , been thinking to get the oil return one made new .. as i cannot be sure in what condition are those two underneath the braided outer layer .. very likely still good but yeah , getting a bit OCD about the lot !

Will think about it ....

No idea why they switched to the oil spray bar without the holes , also they added small (5.5mm if i remember) O-rings on the ends which push into the cam caps .

For oil bars sometimes it's not the more the better, on XU5/9 before 1988 they had too much oil flow and on some engines at idle when hot you could hear a clicking noise.

The oil bar for the older XU5 and XU9 is 1168.04, it's the metal one with green plastic and O-rings, older variants have brown or black plastic and should not be used.

The oil bar for XU10 8v, XU5/7JP and XU7JB is 1168.10, the plastic one should be the final variant ; not sure if the older metal one is to be replaced whenever possible.

Hmm , will take a closer look at them .

Later year parts should be "improved" , so guess they deleted those holes for some reason .

I just do not like plastic parts inside the engine ! same plastic spray bar snapped off on another head when i tried to pull it out .

So in that case , will use that metal one from NA XU10J2 instead .

So I found a bit more about 1168.10, on the XU5JP and XU7JP engines you can find a metal oil bar with holes then another one without holes and finally the plastic one.

On early engines the camshaft (0801.P1?) can be visibly worn, in that case it must be replaced with 0801.K6 that has superior heat treatment on the cams. This better camshaft can be paired with any of the 3 oil bar variants.
