XU10 8v aftermarket valve guides issue !

Some strange s**t , i've never ever had this before during 25years messing with the engines 

 

I bought new valve guides , 4 IN and 4 EX , picked TRW brand as they (?! used) to be good .

 

Left the head at the machine shop for them to replace the guides and cut 3 angle seats and all seemed ok. ..

Till i went fitting stem seals .

 

No issue on the EX guides , but while trying on the IN guides it was a no go - they did not fit because the tops of the IN guides are too small !! .. and seal too big .

 

Both guides where for XU10 8v engines , lenght wise and internal dia. all good but for some reason the top side of the IN guides was machined about 1mm smaller for the std. stem seal .

Weird ...

 

Part No. is : 81-5324 by TRW (do not buy !!!) 

 

Cannot get the verniers down to them to measure which outside dia. they are .. and honestly no idea what to do now ?! 

 

Long shot but , does anyone know which engine might have one step smaller stem seals than OE PSA XU10 8v ones ?! 

 

Only other option seems like re-doing again all the inlets .. so another set of new IN guides of correct dia. for the seal , 3 angle seats recut again , and skimming = more $$ spend cause of crap aftermarket part manufacture error

If the head place is decent, they should be able to find an alternate seal to suit the inlets. Otherwise, push them out and start again unfortunately. I would be screaming at whoever supplied the guides.  I guess that's the issue of not letting the head place do the job from start to finish, including supply of parts.

 

On a side note, XU9J4/XU10J4 guides are in very short supply at the moment. I'm tooled up ready to make my own if it continues. I ended up finding exhaust only guides at Metelli. I would try them. You might have to buy a few sets howeever.

True .. i should've left the machine shop to supply the guides .
Few machine shops which i used in the past didnt have guides and wanted me to buy and bring in the guides so i kinda got used to supply the guides myself .

 

I went looking but , there does not seem to be such narrow dia. seal for 8mm valves .. all of them for 8mm valves have min. 10.8mm dia for pressing on the guide .

These IN guides seem to be turned down to 9.8mm , so 1mm less than what they should've been .

I found only seals for 7mm valves going down to 9.8mm one the guide side .

 

Indeed , guides seems to be harder to find too ! 

I cannot find new IN ones to replace these ones , even those TRW which i bought are now out of stock (no harm though as they're the wrong ones anyhow !) 

 

Metteli i tried once but cast iron not bronze , they went poop in just few years time .
There's some Turkish made by Gunnes , no idea if they're good need to ask around .
I used mostly Freccia guides , never had problems with those . 

 

I found in my pile of parts some EX guides which i bought for XU9 8v , and they seem to be very close to those XU10 8v IN guides .
Only 1mm longer and obviously the tips are not chamfered like the IN style guides . 
All the other measurements are the same , and i cannot see any difference in the head bores for the guides , in the OE workshop manual it says it's the same dia. for IN and EX  .

 

So can EX guides be used in place of IN guides ?! 

 

They do not protrude much into the valve bowl anyway so not sure why would chamfered end even matter so much :

They're easy enough to modify on a lathe. These inlets use to be Metelli exhausts.

Yes , every man needs a lathe !

 

Will see what the machine shop says ..

 

But odds are it'll be repetition as i cannot find commercialy available seal to cap up this fiasco

Also check hat style seals, the seal just has to be centered by the guide with no real need to firmly grip into it.
