Fitting 1.9 wheels to 1.6

My 1989 1.6 CTI has had 1.9 GTi wheels most of its life, fine, no problems until idiotic failure of my French MoT.

 

Following comment, I've taken a close look at the car. The rear wheels are well within the arches, whilst at the front, the bulge of the tyre is directly beneath the edge of the wing trim. 

 

It's been suggested that if I use base model hubs and 1.9 GTi brake discs, that that will bring my 1.9 wheels into the same alignment as if fitted to a 1.9.

 

Is that the case?

 

Will I see any improvement in ride/handling?

 

Will any other work be necessary if fitting 1.9 discs?

 

Any particular brand of disc recommended/to avoid?!

yes base model hubs will fit directly to a 1.6, and narrow the track by about 10mm per side, pulling the wheels into the arches

 

you can use your existing brake caliper on a fresh vented 1.9 disc, any reputable brand will suffice, textar, brembo, ate, trw, there are loads.

 

steering may feel heavier as you are adding more rotating mass and a stiffer sidewall.

  Many thanks, also read your article on interchangeability etc, very helpful. I'll get the 1.9 discs, the grooved ones from Brembo seem likely.
