1989 CTi 2 piece exhaust system

Recommended Posts

Well, the brazed repair to my silencer didn't last, and the internals have got loose, making my car sound like a bag of nails. This is the front section, an Arvin Timax PG209P which I fitted in 2004, so no complaints ... but finding a replacement is proving impossible here in France (any leads welcome). To clarify, this is the downpipe and front silencer in one piece, with an olive bell for mating to the rear silencer. See image below

Research suggests I might be able to buy in the UK, either Klarius or Euroflo. Can anyone comment on which is preferred, or alternatives that are actually in stock?

Can you not buy an OE system from Peugeot museum?

Thanks but no! Checked again, also specifically 170495, nothing. They can probably supply the rear silencer, which, naturally, I don't need.

Both those brands are frankly, rubbish. The sort of thing You would fit to pass a yearly vehicle inspection, rather than to a car You intend to keep.

Autos& Vehicles

I agree, but the last time I looked for someone there was not much else available in standard replacement guise.

Diesel silencers and front pipes are hard to find as well, I tried a Polish one, a Slovenian one and a ,no COE one from fleabay, all were crap. If they were the only choice I would go with the Polish ones as they were much cheaper and similar quality.

OP check Polish sites fleabay etc they may cover Your needs?

The current klarius are as good as it gets and are crap.

I have bought old stock genuine ones from italy, the postage puts You into 20% VAT territory though.

The last 2 Diesels I did, I converted to early type sleeved ones as they were available in Genuine old stock but can be a pain to split the silencer if You need to drop the axle or such.

Buy just the middle section of the 3 piece system with the silencer and get it welded up or make it sleeve/olive fit ..

Or switch to complete 3 piece system ..

I've on mine 3 piece olive system , made by MTS Italy .. +5 years now and no complains .

There's 3 piece Bosal too and sometimes you can bump into Walker ..

Be practical people , and stop complaining about everything and anything !

Yes practical, adapting an earlier good quality exhaust in the diesel cases I mentioned.

Quite how You interpret that as "complaining about everything and anything" is beyond my ken.

My info is good and could be helpful to anyone trying to choose from whats available as `plug and play` (I so hate that phrase)

Maybe You got out of the wrong side this morning;)

Hi Damir,

Not offended by anything anyone has said, but do remember we British are (reputedly!) a nation of complainers! Aussies call us "whingeing poms"!

And to prove it .... I can easily buy a ready made full stainless exhaust system for my 1951 Riley RMB, yet I can't buy an essential exhaust section for my far more recent far more mass produced 205. Peugeot are still making cars, Riley aren't!

Any chance you have part numbers for those MTS and Bosal systems?

Noted about welding in sections, but I have no welding equipment and driving the exhaust-less CTi to a garage not ideal, furthermore I'm then left with a non-standard system headache for the future.

Blimey, you went tits up for nothing !
But at least we got the forum going a bit from the drop dead .

Say there are no exhaust systems available - zero .

But there might still be some old stock here and there of those crap aftermarket ones. Would you then be happy that you can get them, even if they are at a slightly higher price than now ?

It's some +/- 40 year old machinery , so you've got to appreciate that there are still parts available for them !

For comparison , the 406 (kind of V6 spec).

I had a very hard time finding quite a lot of parts for it , from engine bits and coolant hoses to various bushes , electronic , and body parts ..

I was chuffed that I was still able to dig some of them up !! but it took quite a bit of effort .

So much so that I bought doubles to keep in stock for the future ..

I'll have a look for those part numbers .

Of course I did ! and I always do these days.

I’m sick and living with severe chronic pain 24/7 for the rest of my life.

My reply wasn’t meant to be offensive (I hope it didn’t come across that way), and it wasn’t directed at you personally .

I'd recommend 3-piece sleeve system !

I found it to be much less restrictive, and you can really feel that it performs better compared to the olive system with the Ph2 rear silencer.

Rear silencer in the sleeve system is absorption type (straight-through glasspack), whereas the olive system uses a reflection typer (acoustic chambers) .

Noise wise , i found bugger all difference between the two , if nothing sleeve system sounds better to me .

MTS :

01.14840 front pipe

01.51620 middle sectiion

01.63750 rear silencer

Bosal

884-761 front

270-761 mid

190-759 rear

Prices around 60EU per each individual piece , which is really good compared to some other stuff rolling around !

Thanks Damir,

Really helpful. Looked at buying through Trodo, good parts prices but around €350 P&P. Cough! Will carry on looking tomorrow,

In the meantime, if I buy the complete 3-piece sleeve system, will it mount OK on my 2-piece originally equipped CTi, or will I have to mess around with mountings etc?!

Blimey ! over here its pretty much bang on 180EU for the lot .. parts alone without postage .

Take a peek on AutoDoc , they seem best priced for EU market .

Bosal is more expensive , MTS cheaper but just as good if not better i'd say ..

Bosal exhausts come in few grades , best for auto makers , next OE dealer networks , last aftermarket ..

TBH i've had a few silencers (for other cars not the 205) and they went poop bit too soon for what was expected ..

Hi Damir,

Thank you so much for your insights, much appreciated. €350 was just the P&P with Trodo!

Checked out MTS with Autodoc ... around €197, but another €100 for P&P! Pretty absurd but significantly less than Trodo.

 More research tomorrow.

Laurence

  1. Why not make your own exhaust system, buy the silencers and pipe. I bought two silencers, the oval one as a middle and the round as the final silencer, with 55m exterior pipe interior 52mm, they are well packed and straight through. They have european homologation E1, as they are manufactured in Spain.
