Cylinder Head Gasket Identification Holes...

My interest is in those for the XU9JA, in case it matters.

The existing gasket has 3 (three) holes on the projecting tab, spaced as two together and separately a single one at the other end.

My understanding is that for my head one hole denotes the 1.3mm gasket and two holes for the 1.5mm one.

I've no idea how old the one I have is, guessing it's been on a while judging from appearances, but functioning / in good nick none the less..

Using a mediocre set of verniers, its compressed section averages around 1.4mm, while the non-compressed protruding tab is 1.9mm, having said that it wouldn't surprise me that it may have swollen due to exposure to oil etc. over the years, has that look about it so perhaps misleading.

I can't find a reference to a three holed gasket, does one exist?

Presumably if so it would be thicker than the 1.5mm of the two hole one?

If it is in fact a two hole (1.5mm) gasket and that third hole is a red herring, would 1.4mm post fitting be an expected thickness for a used gasket?

Yup... 1.3 (or very slight variations of it) are the standard gasket, with 1.5 available for skimmed heads.

Those images give a good view of the holes (single or twin), problem is that at the moment I can't find anything to say if there's a three hole option. (ie. thicker again).

Precisely measuring the head when the time comes will answer things, but until then I don't have the means to do it accurately enough, knowing if there were other recognised thicker options would help at this stage.

That one is std. head gasket , in std. depending on manufacturer they range from 1.27mm to 1.3mm .

Next up repair gasket is again from 1.48mm to 1.50mm , that one has 4 indentations so one additional hole next to the single on the pic above for thicker aka repair .

Compressed head gasket thickness usually ends up around 1.0/0.9mm , best to measure with micrometer on the fire rings .

Cheers... Have yet to find a current day gasket with 4x holes, but have since turned up two cases of those with the same three I have (and in that 2/1 split layout)... they're from the BGA and FAI brands, and both are the standard 1.3.

Bizarrely checking out their 1.5 gaskets, they both just use 2x holes to identify them.

When it appears that all the other main makers such Elring, Victor Reinz etc., stick to a common one hole for 1.3 and two holes for 1.5 format, a few doing their own thing is bound to lead to potential for confusion.

Seems too that 1.5 is the max. recognised thickness, regardless of maker.

specifically for XU9JA   0209 E1 is the standard gasket, I believe Payen made the original ones and they are listed at 1.2mm for Gasket BL650, the repair gasket is 0209 L3 which is shown as 1.50mm,   Payen show it as a  BR510 at 1.44mm.

The head gasket type by hole reference is from the OE Peugeot/Citroen overhaul manual .

At the time OE gasket suppliers where Curty and Meillor , none of those exist today from what i know with the exception of Curty which was bought by Corteco .

Myself , head gaskets wise i prefere Erling , Corteco and depending on the make/model and gasket type V.Reinz (wasn't quite happy with some composite HG from V.Reinz while the MLS ones where always good)

Just pick the head gasket by the thickness which you desire and ignore the holes on the side as a reference as it seems obsolete info nowadays .
