Cam choice

Hi guys

in need of more power I am looking at a set of “Ultimate Road 274 /267 degree cams”.

any experience with those cams ?  Are they worth the money?

any idea af the gains they Will provide?

sticking to hydraulic lifters they seem to be the best option?
Gti6 engine, ITB and stand alone ecu.

thanks

Race or street car?

Whose cams/part number are those?

What pistons?
Is the engine disassembled?

Thanks guys.

Race car only. Engine all together. Pistons with pockets.

Cat cams indeed.

Seems to be the most aggressive which will go with the hydraulic lifters.

right now I have std. Cams in - no exitement at all - nothing like the mi16 - need more power and more exitement.

There is a saying, do it nice or do it twice. As yours is a race car, I have the feeling you'll be doing it twice. eg

Pistons - how do you know you'll have sufficient piston-valve clearance? This needs to be checked at 6º ATDC on the inlet. For hydraulic lifters, you need 0.080" on the inlet. You could have 0.070" with solids. What pistons do you have?

Lifters - if this is race car only, you'll eventually pop a hydraulic lifter and touch a piston, from banging on the limiter. They really should be solid.

Cam Duration - those cams are still reasonably mild. Definitely an upgrade from oem but really only fast road. You could go a lot bigger, if you have the CR and solid lifters. 2mm of lift @ TDC isn't much for a race engine.

If you want a "drop in" solution, then sure, but just beware of the limitations and don't buzz it.

newmann phase 4 I think are a bit longer and taller and work with hydralics (is what I run and others).

Worring your engine is "together already" though, you really need to dry build and confirm everything before final build else, as peter says, you will be doing it again after having likely destroyed something

Thanks guys. Much appreciated.

what does it take to convert to solid lifters?

can I meassure the required gap without taking the head off?  I believe the pistons are JE. Installed by the PO.

I really would like to make it “Nice” without taking everything apart

do not want a High reving machine - aiming at Max 7000 rpm.

@Speshhow much of a difference does the Newman phase 4 cams make over oem ? - how and where. Right now the engine is a torque builder- which I like very much - I’m however being left in the BMW dust Down the straights however short they are.

I’ve been looking at a 280 hp engine in France - too expensive for my budget though.

Really value your input.

It does cost a bit, as you need to buy new lifters and then pay someone to shim them, if you don't have the skills. It's really an engine out job though, as there is a fair bit of setup involved. If you're confident it has aftermarket pistons, then sure, just drop the 106 cams in. Start off with 106/109 centrelines and use a 7500 rev limit. Max hp will be 7100-7200 I expect.

Note that the cam card says 2.0mm with a 110º inlet centreline. For a 106º centreline, the lift @ TDC will be more like 2.50mm, if you use the lift @ TDC set up method.

Thanks Peter.

not sure I entirely understand everything you write :-) I believe I will go with the Cat cams. If I win the lottery I’ll go full race as you rightfully suggests to be the right thing.

how much Will your phase 2 cam provide compared to the Cat cam option?

Sorry, I don't sell cams anymore. If you don't understand what I wrote, perhaps you should pay someone to dial your cams in after you have installed them, before the dyno?

Cams alone is difficult to quantify.

With jenvey 48s on a stock engine and management made 187, with the engine built for the cams and timed correctly it made 240ish (206 wheels)
