Timing belt direction and timing marks

Recommended Posts

First time fitting a new timing belt to my XU5ja ended up a bit confusing.

using this kit
https://www.motor-doctor.co.uk/products/8138917-water-pump-and-timing-belt-kit

I started by fitting it so the belt factory timing marks lines up with the crank/cam marks. (after putting the dovels into the camshaft and crankshaft) The marks lined up almost perfectly on both the cam and crank (see picture of crank).  However i then realized that the directional arrow on the belt itself now indicates a counter-clockwise rotation.  So it seems i put it on the wrong way.

I then turned it around, so the arrow on the belt points in a clockwise direction (looking at the crankshaft from the right, like my picture), and now the timing marks no longer match at all.

So, i ended up making my own marks, of course with the locking dovels in place. But now i wonder if i did something wrong here. Should the factory marks on belt and car match, or maybe the belt is more universal and there for another car/model? Or am i completely wrong thinking that the engine should rotate clockwise from this position?

Tbh, i was thinking that the arrows was there to make sure that the timing marks WOULD line up.

if its pinned and the belt in the right direction thats all you need to do, many belts dont have any timing marks at all as they're redundant if you use the pins.
