Removing Drive Shafts...

Recommended Posts

Just me being belts and braces as the consquences of my not having understood correctly (or the info. I'm reading isn't correct) could end up in a lot of avoidable hassle.

Haynes (page 325, Chapter 13, Supplement) says my 1989 1.9 GTI BE3 equipped car no longer requires one of the driveshafts to remain in place (or alternately use a special Peugeot tool / home made wooden dowel) if the other shaft is removed... object was previously to prevent the differential side gears falling into the housing (Point 10, page 159, Chapter 7 Driveshafts).

Not saying it's the case here, but Haynes VW MK1 / 2 Golf manuals do have a reputation for not being quite right on occassion!

I've personally never come across a BE diff that needed said special tool, on cars back to 1986.

Thanks for that - Haynes say the precaution is only applicable to models pre- early 1985...  your experience confirms then that what they say is correct (not that I ever doubted them!)

I doubt everything a Haynes tells me, they say to set track rods to an initial length of "256mm" in reality Peugeot tell us to set them to "265mm", and so on . Their diesel timing figures are pure fantasy as well. The Haynes 205 books are riddled with errors and are at best a general guide.
