Replacement door roll pins and adjustment

Hi all,

 

I took my old roll pins out recently as there was a fair bit of play in both bottom hinges causing both doors to drop when opened. I have removed and will be replacing all four (top and bottom).

 

The doors are already off the car so I now have the door side of the hinges in the garage and the car side still welded to the shell. I can see that the holes on the car side of the hinges are slightly ellipse so I don't think that a fresh set of OE spec' pins alone will solve the drop 100%.

 

According to AutoDoc, the OE pins (904431) are 7.3mm x 49mm https://www.autodoc.co.uk/car-parts/oem/904431?search=OEN+904431.

 

I'm thinking, rather than just by a set of replacement OE pins, I might go for a standard M8 pin (8mm x 50mm) and let the extra 0.7mm diameter take up the slack in the bottom hinges but this feels like a bit of a bodge as I'll still have enlarged holes and I don't know if the doors will hang properly or how long this option might last before they start to drop again.

 

My other thought is to perhaps go with an OE spec' pin and buy a length of brass pipe about 8mm diameter with a thickness of 0.5mm and cut four half moons to pack the hinges out before driving a standard spec' pin through each.

 

I don't really want to be drilling and inserting bushes or converting to the later type as it's all fresh paintwork but access is good seeing as the doors are off and I'm happy with a lump hammer as long as I use plenty of protection (see pic' while removing the old pins ).

 

Also, once I have the pins and hinges in and the doors on, what kind of adjustment can I expect to make? Can I adjust up/down/forward/back/in/out or is the adjustment limited when fine tuning the gaps and final door positioning please?

Your math is a bit off, the pin nominal diameter is 6, 7 or 8mm but that's the diameter of the hole and the diameter of the pin once in place.

To have some spring a "8mm" pin is in fact in the 8.3 to 8.6mm range.

There is a lot of adjustment in all directions with those 2 bolts once the door is loosely fitted but put something on the sill if its newly painted as once those bolts are loose it will slam down.I used 2 little pieces of metal wrapped in insulation tape on the sill step to get it roughly level  and if you only tighten one bolt each hinge it makes adjusting easier . If the door has no glass it weighs hardly anything so easy to lift up by hand for adjustment.
